Things to do with your broken surfboard #1: Have it made into art by Jesse Simon
You could just stick your broken surfboard on the wall as a battle memento, but it'd look far more beautiful reincarnated into art by artist Jesse Simon. Formerly a graffiti artist, Simon wields broken boards into art-slash-sculptures that are selling out fast. Currently on exhibition at the Patricia Faure Gallery.

Nollie girl of the week: New Rip Curl Surfer Fesi Klink
Forget Shaun White, the extreme sports world is awash with young female prodigies to take his place. Girl in point: Fesi Klink. She's only 15 now, but is already a veteran of tow-in surfing in Hawaii and Indonesia. She became the youngest person ever to become tow-certified at 12, and is now the newest member of the Rip Curl Team. Somehow I expect we'll be hearing a lot more about this beautiful young charger.

All you need to do is go to the ticket office during these days and one of CBMR's cheerful ticketing specialists will smile, give you a lift ticket and send you to the slopes to ski or ride for FREE. Wetsuit designs are generally black, dull and boring. But it doesn't have to be that way, if you have enough cash to splash (around US$500) you can design your own custom O'Neill Psycho wetsuit and make it as bright, bad taste and ugly as you want. Which as you can see, is exactly what we've done. Wear this, and you can be certain no one will lose you in the water. You could also design it in colours you actually like and that complement each other, but where's the fun in that.

Hot Spots: Where to find snow RIGHT NOW - Austria and Canada
Image: Still snow at Kaunertal
Now is a difficult time in-between the northern and southern hemisphere snow seasons, but there is still places you can get your snow fix. Basically you've got two choices, Austria for Europeans, and Canada for North Americans. In Austria it snowed last Thursday, and Kaunertal still has 36km of piste open and 136cm snow pack. Over at the Blackcomb Glacier, Canada, 5cm of snow fell on Sunday and there's still an amazing 275cm base. Runs, the terrain park and the half pipe are all open.

iPod speakers are ten a penny, but not many of them are as good looking as Roxy's version, which was a nominee for best accessory product at the SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturers Association) awards. These speakers are totally portable as they can run on either AA batteries or the mains, and thanks to the Sonic Impact technology the speakers certainly pack a punch - no need to hold this baby next to your ear. Nollie woman of the week: Easkey Britton - the first female to surf Aileens
Image: Ken O Sullivan (Surfline)
Surfline have Easkey's report on her first ever tow-in session at Irish break Aileens, and it sounds as if she enjoyed it...
It felt completely surreal. I had a sensation of the wave growing behind me as I dropped down the face. And the speed, what a buzz to have so much speed. I felt totally vulnerable and invincible all at once! I rode the wave all the way in and that was it, I was hooked. I'd never felt such stoke, a pure adrenaline rush, my blood was on fire. I didn't feel the cold anymore and my legs were jelly. I had no idea how big the wave was until I saw the photos. I couldn't believe my eyes; it was the biggest ride of my life.

They also make rather lovely organic t-shirts, all of which, like this hang loose in the juice tee, are certified by The Soil Association. No pesticides and insecticides were used to create it (an average t-shirt uses the equivalent of a cup of sugar) and it still only costs £22.99 - pretty much the same as any bog standard, non organic, non carbon neutral top. C Skins Ladies Long Sleeve Thermal Rash Vest review
Oh so toasty, so warm and toasty. In comparison to a normal summer short sleeved rash vest, this made such a difference to my temperature in the not-nearly-warm yet waters of North Devon. My surfing companions had to get out after a few hours because they had the shivers, but I was still to feel a chill and could have quite happily stayed in longer (I should add we all had wetsuits, boots, and gloves on - this won't keep you warm on its own)...
The fabric itself is thick enough to keep you warm, but still soft, non-chafing and flexible enough for me to forget I'm wearing it as soon as I'm in the water. The extended ultra soft neck helped prevent my wetsuit collar rubbing, and also added an extra barrier against those evil cold back flushes (of which I suffered none). Highly recommended and well priced in comparison to other brands at £39.99.
Oh, and it makes you look at least a size smaller too - very slimming for, er, the few minutes people will see it when you're changing out of your wetsuit by your car.

fffrozen surf and beach fragrances
fffrozen perfumes are in actual fact not frozen, they're normal temperature fragrances that don't test on animals, have no carbon footprint and contain few nasty things. Surf is for men folk and apparently is inspired by surf wax, Beach on the other hand is for us girls and is described as a gorgeous blend of light, white-flowered muguet (no idea) and warm citrus fruits. They're aimed at beach lovers in case you hadn't guessed, and right now if you head to their website you can get a free sample to find out what they actually smell like (really nice according to the makers, but we're ordered some to make our own mind up).

Littering Sucks Campaign
Littering does suck, who wants to end up with a mouthful of rubbish while they're surfing? You might be no litter bug, but you can help - If you see someone dropping litter, ask them to pick it up. Or if you get to the beach and there's no surf - pick up a bag of litter instead. Make your beach a nicer place. For more on the littering sucks campaign - see surf photography site kfishsurf.com.

Deter sharks while surfing with Shark Camo
We must think sharks are dumb creatures - first there was the cartoon shark which was supposed to scare them away, and now sticking a shoal of fish on the bottom of your board is the latest shark deterrent. The pattern, which is rather camo-like, hence the name, is based on fish that sharks are known not to eat, the idea being that they won't try to eat you either. It's also available in a wetsuit cover - which you'd have to be really paranoid about sharks to consider wearing.

HangAir wetsuit dryer dries your wetsuit in two hours
Just thinking about putting on a soggy wetsuit makes me shiver - which is why I'd consider giving the Hang Air a go. Sort of like a giant coat hanger with a fan inside, it dries your wettie out as quickly as two hours - making two surfs in a day actually seem like a good idea. You can even run it using your car charger, ideal if you aren't keen on a having a sopping wet suit inside your tent. Available for £49.99 from Surfing Innovation.

Choose your next surf board on the beach beat web cam
Image: Sarah Bentley on a Beach Beat board
Want a new surfboard but haven't the time to go take a closer look? Beach Beat surfboards, as shaped by Chops, will show you any board that takes your fancy on their web cam. Just ring them up and they'll show you your new board every which way, throwing in a leash if you decide to buy after your web cam session. Have a gander at the cam here.
There's also a great feature on the site where you can see how a surfboard is made from beginning to ready for a surf. But be warned, too much time on their website and you'll be mentally spending money, oh for one of their Challengers.

Sea Specs protect your eyes while surfing
While these sunglasses are hardly the height of watersports fashion (yet), your eyes will thank you for it if you don them in the water. You wouldn't think of going snowboarding without goggles, so why risk your eye health in the water? Life long surfers can find themselves suffering from pterygiums, a horrid-sounding eye problem - so best keep your eyes covered. Unlike goggles, these don't fill up with water, and unlike your average sunnies, they should stay on your head. Sea Specs are US$55 and can be shipped worldwide.

RealWiiings help you fly while surfing (maybe)
I've no idea why the makers of RealWiiings decided that wings needed three i's, or that real wings should be one word not two. But however dodgy their spelling and grammar, their strap on paddle aids do seem to be getting a good rep. Attach the RealWiiings to your wrists, and, in theory, you should be able to get out back without tiring out your arms too much, and catch every wave you paddle for with your new improved speed. RealWiiings (ok, really getting tired of the stupid spelling now) are available in 13 different colours and cost £19.99 a pair.

Summer snow #6: Chile
Image: Andean Powder Tours Chile
Can I go yet, can I go yet? Not quite, but the season starts mid June and runs through to mid October, so you haven't long to wait.
Is it going to be really expensive? Yes. Sorry about that. If you will demand powder in July, it's gonna cost ya. The main expense is the airfare, budget airlines don't tend to fly as far as Chile...
Right, I've got piles of cash. What now? If you really do have piles of cash, considered guided backcountry tours with Skiing Chile, eight days in untouched pow is US$2, 495. Pile not that big? Crystal do package tours to Valle Nevado - one of the biggest Chilean resorts, or you can go it alone and book transfers and hotels through Chilean Ski.

Six ways to survive snowboarding on dry slopes and artificial snow surfaces
Image: Mmm dendeath (Ben Howells)
Now I'm not saying dry slopes are dangerous, well, not all of them anyway, but treat them like snow and you're asking for trouble - but with a little preparation, you can ride there all summer relatively unscathed.
1. Wear a helmet. Hitting your head on a pile of fluffy snow is one thing, slamming into criss-crossed metal is quite another.
2. Don't wear anything you might want to use on snow again. Your gloves? They will get shredded. Snowboard pants? Expect holes. In short, save your expensive waterproofed gear for the real thing, and wear something you don't mind getting destroyed.
3. Wear long sleeves. I don't know if you've fallen over on this stuff yet, but it hurts. Friction burns are not uncommon.
4. Invest in a dry slope board. If you can possibly afford it, keep
one board pristine for snow, and use another for the dry slope.
Artificial surfaces have a habit of killing boards.
5. Go when it's raining. Dry slopes are one place where you want, some
might say need, it to rain. Go when it's sunny, and you'll be going
nowhere, head up after a good soaking and you might actually get some
speed up.
6. Remember that it isn't snow. Yes, it is snail-speed slow. No, you can't carve nicely. Yes, landing jumps is harder, and you certainly won't find any pow. But that's because it isn't snow - yes, it does suck in comparison, but guess what? You're still snowboarding on it, so be happy!

Frostfire Moonbags make changing out of your wetsuit effortless (almost)
Before you say what the **** is a moonbag? I'll tell you. The moonbag is a way to change out of your wetsuit without getting sandy feet, and a way to protect your car from your soggy wet gear and keep it clean. Using it is easy. When you get back from your surf/sail/dive/waterski, open up the bag into a mat, saving your feet from the stony car par and whip off (alright, struggle out of) your wetsuit and bikini, dump it all by your feet, draw the bag up, haul the whole thing in the car and you're done. You'll wonder how you ever did without one.
They're priced at £14.99 and available in blue, black and pink at New Oxygen.

Roxy Shimmer all-female surfing DVD review
The Roxy girls certainly do shimmer, and get barrelled, and hang ten. All this combined with beautiful music, and mixed with sparkling shots of the ocean that'll make you wish you were beach bound, means Roxy Shimmer is a must-have surf dvd for any wahine. Say what you will about the surf giants Quiksilver, but Roxy certainly have a team that is worth watching. Surfing it-girls Megan Abudo, Chelsea Georgeson and Sofia Mulanovich show off their strong and powerful surfing styles on amazing waves, while Lisa Andersen reminds us why she's a girl-surfer legend, and the footage from the Roxy Pro Fiji is simply awe-inspiring...
In the longboard section, Kassia Meador cross-steps elegantly, while Crystal Dzigas does possibly the most stylish bail I've seen yet. The up and coming footage includes Carissa Moore, the girl who recently put Layne Beachley out of the running in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
The film is set on some of the world's best waves, from Hawaii to Indonesia, and cinematographer for Shimmer, Sonny Miller, sums up the film perfectly when he says, 'we’re travelling around the world just trying to capture magic – and that’s basically what Shimmer is.' Pure all-girl surf magic.

Ten things to remember for your first time snowboarding
If you're just about to take your first tentative heel and toe slides on the slopes, keep these tips in mind...
1. You will fall over. Accept it and beg, borrow or steal a pair of impact shorts. Your bum will thank you for it.
2. Don't wear a) jeans b) a skirt. Jeans are restrictive and will soak up a litre of water every time you fall over. The skirt? Well it's obvious, isn't it?
3. Bend your knees. Ok, now bend them more. It makes it easier, promise...
4. Be aware of other slope users. Don't sit under jumps or cut people up and look before you slide.
5.
Don't buy the most expensive Burton gear you can find before you've
even had a go. Chances are you'll have bought the wrong thing and will
end up having to buy it all over again. Plus, you'll look like a twit.
6. Pointing your board straight down the hill and hoping for the best will leave you with a broken leg.
7. Likewise, heading straight up to the black run won't do you any favours.
8. Don't learn in front of someone you fancy, the first steps in snowboarding are very undignified.
9. Lessons? Are good. You'll learn quicker having a lesson than trying to pick it up yourself. Fact.
10. Snowboarding is addictive. Once you're hooked, there's no way out. Snowboarders Anonymous here you come.

Ski and Snowboard resort review: Fernie Alpine Resort, British Columbia Canada
Bare facts: Average of 29 feet of snow each year, in five super fun bowls, via 10 lifts servicing 2504 acres and 107 trails, with infinite ways down the mountain.
Best bits? Powder days on a weekly basis. Uncrowded slopes. Never having to queue for the lift. Cheap food and hot chocolates in the Day lodge. Super friendly locals. Oh yeah, and it snowed, a lot! Saying that, we experienced every snow condition from champagne powder, to solid ice, to rain logged slopes, to sunny slush.
Worst bits? The T-bar lift being the only way out of Cedar Bowl (but this did mean it was always virtually empty). Most accommodation is in the town, so the only way to get to the hill is the bus (quite pricey at CAN$3 each way) or to hitch...
Where's the best place to go when there's pow? Now, that would be telling.
Run to avoid if you're on a snowboard: Falling star. This three
mile run may boast of being the longest run on the mountain, but it's
also as flat as a pancake, and at times, up hill. If you do go down it,
get up as much speed as you dare - you'll be thankful when you ride out
and your mates are still scooting along half an hour later.
Best run on a snowboard? The rest of the mountain? There's a lot of traverses to some of the best bits, but it's usually worth it in the end.
What about the park? Last season (06/07) there were three, and
none of them have lifts. The main park has more jumps than you could
ever want, all perfectly maintained, along with several rails and a
boarder cross course - just be prepared for the killer hike back to
the top. And be aware that the only way out is via falling star (see
run to avoid). There was also a family park, with two lines of boxes
and rails for beginners and intermediates, and a learner park with two
badly maintained jumps and a few small rails. If you're all about the
park, then this isn't really the resort for you. What you will find
however, is natural hits all over the mountain.
Go there if: You're looking for steep and deep - it snowed right up
until day before resort closing last season, and we had deep pow in
April (and December, January and February). And yes, it is steep, don't
come here if you like miles of gentle greens.
Go elsewhere if: You're all about the partying rather than the riding.

Icon Australia Jewellery at Extreme Pie
It's always the way. I go all the way to Canada, proudly find Icon Australia Jewellery and tote it home satisfied that no one will have the same earrings as me, and then literally days after I get back, they go and start stocking it on Extreme Pie. Pah! Lucky for everyone else though, it's really rather lovely, and you don't have to go to Canada, or Australia, to get your hands on some. See Extreme Pie's selection here.

Get your stoke on: The Hang Board
Image: Pro HangBoard pilot Mira Mackey gets some head first air, eeek!
The cross breeding of extreme sports is getting out of hand. Never mind the bike-cross-board-cross-every extreme sport ever invented, this is the handglider-cross-snowboard-cross-mountain bike. It's called the Hangboard, and it looks like a torture device. Instead of standing on the board, you are hung horizontally a foot above it. Sound dangerous yet? Don't worry, there's brakes! If you fancy a go, then visit Hangboard.ca to find out the when they'll be doing a demo tour near you next season, or soon, you'll be able to buy your own.
Keep reading to see a video of the HangBoard in action...

Free online snowboarding games
Want the snow to come back? Check out our summer snow series and while away the time until you reach the white stuff with these free online snowboarding games.
CBC Snowboarding - Ah the pow! Slalom your snowboarder through the tree gates as fast as you can. A bit mundane, but it'll take you right back to the fluffy days.
Airdog Snowboard Challenge - Guide your crazy tongue-sticking-out snowboarding dog down the hill, avoid obstacles and squirrels and hit as many jumps as possible. Slightly insane.
Gecko Snowboarding - Control your gecko on a board and help it do big airs and follow a giant dog. Kind of addictive...
Frosty Flips - Santa does triple backflips on a green slope in order to catch cakes and sweets. Like snowboarding on magic mushrooms.
Carvin' - A god damn awful game which will make you feel like a beginner again because the board is impossible to control. You have to collect coins as you go down the slope. Wha?

Woman of the week: 12-year-old world champion kiteboarder Gisela Pulido
She's the winner of the Kiteboard Pro World Tour, yet she isn't even a teenager yet. Her tricks see her up to 30ft in the air, and as you can see from the picture, would put any man to shame. Plus, she's the definition of multi-talented - not only is she the best in the world at kite surfing, she also surfs, skateboards and horse rides. All that talent meant she can count Dakine, Ripcurl, VW, Adecco and Shapes Kiteboards amongst her sponsors already. If you can read Spanish, then check out Gisela's blog (non Spanish speakers can still look at the pics!).

Waterman Board Carrier Surfing Backpack - carry food and drink while you surf
When the surf is epic, going in for food and drink seems like a chore - so don't. The waterman backpack holds enough food and drink to sustain you during your session, and is as slimline and close fitting as possible so that it doesn't interfere with your surfing. I don't know what surfing with a pack on would be like, but rest assured that once you're out of the water, it carries on being useful, doubling up as a board carrier.

Rock and Sun Girls on Rock women only climbing holidays and courses in the Costa Blanca
According to Rock and Sun, women climb differently to men. They can't rely on brute force to get them up, so they maximise their flexibility, focus, creativity and inner strength. That's why Rock and Sun have created their all female climbing holidays in Costa Blanca. With instruction and encouragement from coach Ruth Taylor, you'll climb sunny Spanish rock faces in the day time, and relax with the girls in the evening.
The cost is £549 not including flights, visit Rock and Sun for more information.
