Spot Check: Bridport The Trick Factory Skate Park

New for this week is spot check, where we'll do ickle videos of all the fun places we can find to play. First up, ideal for rainy days (that'll be everyday at the moment, then) an indoor skatepark, whoo! This one is in Bridport, the people are nice (mainly bmxers, just so you know), and it's cheap. The only downside is that it's due to be knocked down for housing development within the next two years, so get there while you can.

Extreme Ironing. Just as dull as normal ironing

Extreme_ironing
It seems an advert by Stena Line ferries has caused a flurry in extreme ironing. Although I initially imagined something along the lines of stair surfing on an ironing board (not recommended, I've seen the consequences), apparently it's all just about pretending to iron in 'extreme' locations (like, a field). If your ironing is judged to be the most 'extreme' you win free travel for four.

Snowvolution's never ending ski slope

Fancy skiing or snowboarding indoors on a never ending snowslope? It could be the future if the Snowvolution concept comes to fruition. The slope would consist of rotating discs moving at speeds of up to 15 metres per second, and er..., well, it's really all too confusing for my addled brain to understand, so why not watch this promo video instead...

Interview with founder of Betty Belts Donna Von Hoesslin

Betty_belts_interview_donna_von_h_2

We talk surfing, beaches and inspiration with the founder of Betty Belts, Donna Von Hoesslin...

What made you decide to set up Betty Belts?

I'd just come out of a divorce and a life in Europe (17 years in Berlin), discovered surfing, and fell in love with it. I was a late bloomer becoming a surfer, but embraced it fully, making it an integral part of my lifestyle. I decided to move back to the US and start over with a way of life and career that included surfing on a day to day basis. So when I started Betty Belts, I made it a surf company. I created a surf team and started sponsoring contests, mostly womens'. I have been supporting womens' surfing from day one over four years ago...

How do you find so many new ideas?

I am inspired by things like nature and architecture, but also have a strong influence from dreams and nature. For example, I was intrigued and obsessed with lotus flowers on trips to Bali, how they would seemingly miraculously emerge, so pure and clean, out of murky waters. So I created the Lotus design, which inspires all who wear it as a symbol of enlightenment. Some of the designs I add to my collection are introduced to me by the Balinese artisans who make them. Sometimes we collaborate on designs too, which is always very fulfilling for both of us. They are very creative people and enjoy making new designs and seeing them have success.

Who or what inspires you?

Surfing and the ocean have always inspired me from the start. My fiancé, David Pu'u, inspires me deeply. He is a photographer and his work is just stunning. I am blessed to get to hang with him when he is shooting and be surrounded by amazingly talented friends, be a part of beautiful experiences, and encounter a lot of serendipity. And being socially and environmentally responsible inspires me.

Where's your favourite beach in the world to surf?

The one where there's no crowd, just myself and my friends and dolphins who come by for a visit and maybe share a few waves.

What message do you have to other surfer girls out there?

I always say this: Stay inspired. Life is a blessing and too much of it gets wasted on stuff that doesn't matter. Enjoy the ride! And one more thing: be a conscious consumer, you CAN make a difference!

Visit Betty Belts to buy Donna's beautiful designs, and don't forget to check out The Betty Blog.

White Stuff Surf Relief Day at Watergate Bay

White_stuff_surf_relief_day
The White Stuff Surf Relief Day is taking place on the 7th July at Watergate Bay, and is raising funds for surf projects and international aid. There's comps aplenty, and even if all you can do is catch the white water on a swell board, you're in with a chance of winning! As well as a womens' competition, there's a fancy dress surfing competition and a swell board comp as well. Throughout the day on the beach they'll be sandcastle building contests, beach football, circus workshops, ultimate frisbee and a chance to design your own White Stuff T shirt. Come sunset, watch live bands on the sand and celebrate the end of a fun-packed day!

Heaven on earth? Snow and Wake Bulgaria

Snow_wake_bulgaria

I think I may have found heaven. And it's cheap. Who knew a place existed where you could snowboard, ski, wakeboard, mountain board, hike, kite surf, and drink all you want, without spending your life savings (does anybody even have life savings any more?). Snow and Wake Bulgaria offers snowboarding and wakeboarding holidays so well priced I had to keep checking I was reading it right. The snow may not be the deepest in the world, but the lake's not going anywhere and vodka is only 40p. Visit their website to find out more and book.

Wet Women Surf Wax - bringing feminism to surfing...sort of

Wet_women_surf_wax
If the ample chest on the front of mighty mounds surf wax offends you, switch brands to Wet Women Surf Wax, the feminist brand of surfing wax, if you will. Wet Women proclaim themselves to be a brand devoted to empowerment of women through watersports. Although they still haven't got away from the sexual undertones that typically adorn surf wax. While mighty mounds promises 'smaller, harder nipples' and 'satisfaction guaranteed', Wet Women is all about 'making sure women stay on top' and 'enjoying the ride'. Scandalous.

Driftwood Gone Surfing sign and surf trip money box

Gone_surfing_surf_trip

I always find it kind of ironic that you have to spend money to save money with a money box, but if that doesn't faze you, this driftwood money box does come quite cheap at £8. Plus seeing it hanging around might give you the incentive to stay home and save for the ultimate surf trip instead of going out on the town. Plus when you've saved all those pennies, you get to hang up the 'Gone Surfing' sign. See, all planned out!

Ride Snowboards 07/08 womens bindings - Sigma MVMNT, DVa, LXh and VXn

Ride_07_08_bindings
Ride are among the first to open their 07/08 website, so we'll give them some extra special attention. First up, they reckon they now sell the world's lightest binding, which for women, is in the shape of the Sigma MVMNT (they've gone a bit mad with the txt spk), created especially for freestyle femmes. If you already have a pair of Ride bindings but fancy an upgrade, you can now buy toe straps, highbacks and ankle straps to update your existing setup. Shown is the full womens' specific binding range, which it has to be said, looks pretty damn gorgeous. Especially in comparison with Salomon's not-so-pretty elites.

How to avoid surfer girl hair: Protect your locks in the sea with John Masters Organics and Philip Kingsley

Surfer_girl_protect_your_hair
Being a water gal has some benefits to your hair - you get natural blonde highlights and that 'beach hair' texture that so many products try to replicate, but it's not all good news. Salt water, the sun and wind can leave your hair dry, damaged and destroyed - here's how to avoid a permanent bad hair day...

Before you go in the water, slather on a helping of Philip Kingsley's Swim Cap (£16), not only does it protect your locks from wind, salt water and UV damage, it also deep conditions while it works - a double whammy of goodness for your sea-beaten hair.

When you get home, treat your hair to John Masters Organics Honey & Hibiscus Hair Restructing Shampoo (£26). The formulation of organic jojoba oil, lavender, honey, hibiscus, ylang ylang and pink grapefruit smells delish and will work wonders on dry and damaged hair.

Practising surfing pop ups: Olly Pop Towel - the girls version!

Girls_olly_pop

In this month's issue of Surf Girl, Kirsty Jones recommends doing 20 surf pop ups a day to keep you surf fit and work on your stance. I'm currently averaging five, but if having a surf towel with pre-placed feet guides might inspire you to do more, here you go! We've featured the Olly Pop towel before, but now there's a girls version in different colours. In another magazine (I forget which one, sorry), Sam Lamiroy recommends taking your fins off your board and practising pop ups on your bed. Sounds like it could go horribly wrong, but hey! The moral of the story is, practising pop ups will improve your surfing! Try it.

Save your spine with Aegix shock absorbing snow wear

Aegix

This looks like standard riding gear, does it not? But it's actually tricked out with in-built impact protection. The spine, shoulder, arm, elbows, ribs, hips, thighs, tailbone, knees and shins are all packed out with something called Poron, which is designed to be excellent at shock absorbing without adding too much bulk. Better than stuffing a pillow down your pants, but probably not enough to take the sting out of a smash into a rail. It's also currently only available in three not-all-that-exiting mens' styles, so hopefully there's some decent looking girls stuff on the way!

I love my Salomon Relay elite bindings, they're super comfy yet responsive, and they held up to three months of daily riding without a problem. The only thing I wasn't keen on, was the way they looked. White and baby pink just aren't my colours of choice. Website of the week: Surf Shelter - the surf trip accommodation finder

Surf_shelter
Part wikipedia for surfers, part accommodation finder, Surf Shelter matches accommodation to break and locates it for you using google maps. Users fill in information and locations of global breaks, and hotel and apartment owners can list their properties for surf travellers to find somewhere to stay. As it's an evolving website, not all of the information is complete, but if you already have a destination in mind, it's a great way to scope out some nearby places to stay. And if your requirements include being right on top of the waves, you can filter accommodation and only look at properties that have a view of the break.

Get kitted out like Lisa Andersen with Dakine Pro Traction, Al Merrick's Flyer from Channel Island Surfboards and Roxy Palm Beach Bikini

Lisa_andersen_gear
We're not suggesting this loot will suddenly turn you into a pro-level surfer, but if it works for her, then it's gotta help us mere mortals. Lisa's board of choice is a Channel Island Surfboards Flyer, shaped by Al Merrick, which he thinks it's the best small wave shortboard he's ever designed, and it certainly goes well for Lisa! She's also sponsored by Roxy, and is pictured here in their Palm Beach Bikini. Dakine have worked with Lisa to create a pro model traction pad, and you can get your very own for £25.99.

Support Boarding for Breast Cancer with special edition Anon Majestics Goggles and R.E.D Hi-Fi Helmet

Anon_red_boarding_for_breast_cancer

Backcountry.com makes the point that no one will buy these Boarding for Breast Cancer goodies because they're pink. Which is a valid view, not many girls I know want stupidly pink gear - despite what a lot of people in the industry obviously think. But these aren't over top girly pink, and I think even the guys will like it - pink seems ever more popular with the boys. They'll be available in North America for the 07/08 season, and maybe if we're lucky, over here.

Girls go big at world's first Mountainboarding Girlie Camp

Alli_mini_hump_jump Images: Maniac Films Ltd

Boardology's Alli Carter reports on the Mountain Board Girlie Camp...

For anyone who has ever organised an outdoor event in the UK there are likely to be two issues keeping you awake until the wee hours of the morning...one being the weather forecast and the other being the type of crowd that will pitch up. With hindsight, a whole lot more dreamtime could have been enjoyed in the week ramping up to the World's First Mountainboarding Girlie Camp at South West Mountainboard Centre. After months of planning, promoting, mowing and loads of blagging, Friday 1st June arrived, bringing with it glorious sunshine as fifteen gorgeous ladies from all over the country banged tent pegs into the luscious grounds of SWMBC and got set for an action-packed weekend of mountainboarding, surfing and camping...

Copy_of_copy_of_mboard_017

Whether anyone would admit it or not, what was going through everyone's mind that evening as we watched the sun go down over the Westward Ho! horizon was "am I going to be the worst...is she going to be better than me...omg what if I'm the first to fall!". The next day would reveal all. The girls' ability level ranged from having never set foot on a board of any description, to seasoned snowboarders wanting to try something new, to accomplished mountain boarders already catching air and riding hard. The camp was designed to ensure that every girl went away having done something they had never done before...for most, that was to just get down a hill with a little grace, but many of the girls had the need for speed, higher airs and harder landings, and thanks to the light hearted but professional tuition of Richie Heard, Sam Gleeson, Jos Kirkman, Sophie Friedl & 'Kus' Austin, they got what they came for!

Donna_cheryl_tent

Day one, everyone padded up and the newbies were put through their paces on the gentle nursery slopes. Soon, with a heady mix of determination & enthusiasm, all the gals were cruising with ease and had mastered stopping using the powerslide which meant progressing to the steeper slopes. The more experienced riders in the meantime were ripping it up on the mini-slopestyle course comprised of a range of small features to be hit individually or pieced together through a variety of lines, including rails, berms, north shore platforms, hips and tables..simply a warm up for things to come! Lunchtime brought a welcome break whilst watching an impressive demo by some world class riders such as Jos Kirkman and brother Mick. Adding their flair to the spectacle were Sophie Friedl and Marcus Austin. Not being a boot camp by any stretch of the imagination, massage was available thoughout the day by the healing hands of Morag Leiper.

After a gruelling afternoon of perfecting earlier acquired manoeuvres, everyone swapped their mountainboards for surfboards and piled into Sarah Whitely's "Walk on Waves" surf school van and headed to the beach for a 2 hour surfing session..a first for many of the girls on camp.

Bedraggled, salty and exhausted, all that remained to end an exhilarating day was to head back to camp, light a fire, have a few beers and toast marshmallows. As the campfire crackled & spat into the early hours of the morning new friendships were forged, with the promise of arranging another camp for 2008!

Jacqui_celebrate

Defying the forecast, still no rain, dawn broke on Day 2 ... a day that proved to be even more exciting than the previous. After a much needed post- breakfast warm up, the hard 'er' core group began trying out grabs & rotations and started nailing some of the massive jumps that make SWMBC the world famous centre it is. The equally gnarly-spirited newbie group attacked the mini-slopestyle course and every girl grasped the techniques required to play on smaller kickers & boxes. The camp culminated in a   dramatic foam pit session with impressive demos by Jos Kirkman & Richie Heard, followed by the dishing out some amazing prizes.

The Landroller means you can skate on grass, dirt, or anything you fancy

Landrollers are a in-line skate type product at skew-whiff angles and with giant wheels, which the makers say mean you can skate on more surfaces like grass and dirt. Somehow, the funny wheels actually make you more stable on your feet, allowing you to take on more risky surfaces and attempt a trick or two.

Always wiping out? Cut out the pain with Paingone

Paingone
Extreme sports are named so for a reason; hurting yourself is practically guaranteed. I've had many unfortunate incidents involving various body parts and snowboard rails and surfboard fins, but apparently there's alternative ways of fighting the pain as well as the paracetamol/strong beer combination (not recommended, by the way). PainGone is a pen that sends low frequency charge powered by crystals to send pain-stopping messages to the brain. It may sound like hocus pocus, but it's been clinically proven to work and is even used in hospitals.

Improve your paddling power with the Surf Power Paddle Deal

Power_paddle_surfing
Not every surfer lives near the beach. In fact I'd hazard a guess (just going by the amount of boards travelling up and down the M5 at the weekend) that a fair old proportion of them don't. Keeping fit for those weekend surf sessions can be a problem, which is why there's a growing array of fitness gadgets to help you do just that. Waterman Sports has created the Power Paddle Deal - a combination of gym ball, a rip cord and motivational and instructional emails - to get your paddle-fit in your living room. I'm not sure how effective it would be, but you'd sure look silly doing it.

Surf travel: The Hebrides

Hebrides_surf This weekend our coasts were flat, flat, flat. So here begins our summer travel guide to spots where there might be swell when we're in the midst of high pressure. First of all, staying close to home, is the Hebrides.

Where? When I say close to home, it is, and isn't. Getting to the Hebrides (which are islands off the coast of Scotland in case you didn't know) is akin to a journey to the centre of the earth (or thereabouts). Getting there will involve at least two methods of transport, and it won't be cheap...

How do I know the sea there won't resemble a fish pond? You don't, but these are islands, so they pick up swell from every which direction, giving you a better chance of finding something surfable. And it's so far away there won't be 200 people in each square foot of water, either.

Right, I've finally made it, where now?
There's breaks for all abilities across the islands, Hebridean Surf can help you find the one that's right for you.

Anything else I should know? You're going to the northern-most tip of Scotland. Chances are, it'll be cold. Take winter wetsuits, even in high summer.

Snow more your thing? Find frozen precipitation even in the height of summer with our guides...Les Deux Alpes | New Zealand | Dry slopes | Dubai Snowdome | Whistler Glacier | Chile.

Smell like a Hawaiian beach with Bethany Hamilton's Stoked Perfume

Bethany_hamilton_stoked

Bethany Hamilton's perfume, Stoked, is a lush sounding concoction of creamy coconut, jasmine, pineapple, freesia, musk and lotus blossom - which Bethany says smells like the end of a good days surfing. Hmpf, well it's obvious she's been surfing in tropical Hawaii and not in the not-so-fragrant UK on Brighton beach. As well as a perfume, there's also lip balms, shampoo and conditioner and lip gloss in her Stoked range - all aimed at American teens and sold in Claire's accessories.

Cameron Diaz is not a pro surfer: Why I can't stand 'celebrity' extreme sports role models

Cameron_diaz_surfing_3 Image: Cameron Diaz "surfing" for Charlie's Angels

Today, I read this about Cameron Diaz on Handbag.com...

If you're planning a trip to the golden sands of Hawaii this summer, you might see Cameron catching a tube or two on the highest of Hawaiian waves.

Now, as far as I know, the only picture I've seen of Cameron Diaz surfing is her riding white water on what looks like a mini mal (although she looks a bit better now she's had lessons from Kelly Slater). So to recap, there's absolutely no way in hell (unless Cameron is secretly a pro surfer) that we'll see her riding a tube or two. And the "highest Hawaiian waves" have reached over 50 feet. So unless Cameron has a death wish (and a jet ski) it's highly unlikely she'll be doing that either. Another article, this time in Live magazine, described Cameron as a 'basic downhill snowboarder'. Now what is one of those exactly?

Now I've nothing about Cameron Diaz herself, nor handbag.com, I just don't understand why the mainstream media always drag out a token celebrity (more often than not Diaz) to convince us surfing is cool. Why not feature an actual surfer? There's quite a few of them you know. And it's not as if they're bad looking - they'll fit in fine with your fashion features. Why can't Kassia Meador or Holly Beck or Mary Osborne be our poster girl for surfing? Girls that actually can and do surf, rather than Cameron, who happened to get on a surfboard once and got papped doing it.

Female wakeboarders Denise Dehaan, Will Christien and Justine Charriere on O'Neill TV

Oniell_tv

Quiksilver already has its own TV channel website (www.boardriderstv.com), but now O'Neill have decided its a cheap good means of advertising and have launched O'Neill TV. The selection of videos is actually surprisingly good, and I've spent far too much of my morning watching highlights from the O'Neill Mission and profiles of their female wakeboarders. There's enough on there to keep you occupied for many, many hours and the videos played high quality, full screen with none of those annoying pauses.

What's a Trikke when it's at home then?

Trikke

A Trikke is, and I quote, 'a three wheeled, human powered, cambering vehicle'. There's no pedals, no chains, and you never have to put your feet on the ground yet can reach speeds of 18mph. The way it works requires too many words that I don't remember from my GCSE physics to explain on here (Conservation of Angular Momentum anyone?), but if you're interested they do a good job on their website. The important thing is, it looks fun! The riding movement is likened to carving turns - and if anything can even begin to replicate the sensation of fresh powder on dry land, I'm interested.

Prices start from £174.95 for an adult model. Visit Trikke for more details.

Billabong Equator Auto Sports Hot Skin Bikini for warm, chafe-free surfing

Billabong_equator_hot_skin_bikini
For those off to hotter climes, firstly - I'm jealous, and secondly you'll be one of the lucky ones able to wear this Billabong Equator Hot Skin Bikini (£29.99) sans wetsuit. No matter how close to the equator you are, it'll still go some way to keeping you warm, what with its metalite and thermal construction. For those of us not so lucky, it's still the ideal bikini for under all our neoprene, as apart from being extra toasty, it's made with flat lock construction, and a super soft lycra collar, which equals chafe-free surfing. Pimp your camper van with the Roxy Poolside Princess Chair and Perfect Surf Towel

Roxy_poolside_princess_chair_and_pe

I have to admit to getting camper van envy when changing out of my wetsuit in the beach car park. There's the camper van crew with their chairs out, steaming cups of coffee at the ready, and no public wetsuit wiggling as they've got curtains.  You might not have the funds or the patience to drive a van, but you can kit out your car for post-surf chilling. Wrap the giant Roxy surf towel around you and no one will see your white bits when you're changing. See - who needs curtains! Once your done, relax on the Roxy Poolside Princess Chair, which will fold up to fit in the smallest of surf motors. (I should know, I make the beach commute in a Micra).

Are these the most beautiful skateboard decks ever created?

Etched_skateboard_decks

Wow. Skateboards just got a ton more beautiful. Three artists (Michael C. Place, Michael Leon and Mr.Cartoon) created images to adorn the bottom of these unique skateboards, and those designs were etched onto the seven layers of plywood that make up the skateboard decks via laser. Only 50 of each board has been made, and if you want one, you'll need $500 and a ticket to New York, as they're being sold at Reed Space Gallery at the end of the summer.

O'Neill Bahia Series Booty Halter Wetsuit

Oneill_bahia_series_booty_halter_we
Sadly the water in the UK will never, ever get warm enough for me to wear any of O'Neill's new Bahia Series for women surfing in warm to tropical conditions. But I'm still impressed with O'Neill for making 0.5mm neoprene look almost stylish. As well as being more practical than a bikini (i.e. it's less likely to fall off), it  protects against UV rays, windchill and wax irritation. The range also contains a surfkini, crew top and Bahia shorts (also known as teeny-tiny hot pants).

Monopoly Surfing Edition - the only chance most of us will get to surf Pipeline

Surfing_monopoly

The people at Monopoly have already made a snowboarding edition of their snore-tastic game, and now they're capitalising on surfing has well. Instead of old dogs and boots, the playing pieces in the £39.99 game include surf wax, a flip flop, a surfer, a beach cruiser and a shark. Forget owning London properties, you're playing to "surf and rule" breaks such as Pipeline and Maverick's.

Sigh. At least a percentage of profits go to the Surfrider Foundation.
