Insane Glacier Surfing in Alaska by Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala

Yes. This is exactly what it looks like. Two surfers, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala, hang around a glacier until a giant chunk falls off, fire up their jet ski and attempt to surf the ensuing wave. It's also as dangerous as it sounds, ordinarily waiting around underneath a glacier is a pretty dumb thing to do, and the surfers spent a lot of their time in Alaska wondering if they'd ever go home again. The falling glaciers produced waves up to 25 feet, and although the surfers were used to towing into Hawaiian waves, they weren't used to glacial tidal waves! Crazy stuff.

Via FSO4.

Like that? Try this: Body boarder gets munched by wave | Glen Coe does a double back flip...on a mountain bike | The radio controlled surfer that surfs better than you do | Female wakeboard slams. Ouch

Awesome! Crazy and brave at the same time, but they did it. Congrats.

These people have no life... WAIT for the glacier to calve???

Posted by: Barry | August 20, 2007 6:55 PM

Barry,
Just because you're a Liberal, non athlete, who likes to read a book every day, and spout off on how much you hate Bush, doesn't mean they have no life. That's more living in one day than you will ever do in a lifetime! You should try it, you girl!

Awesome! A little crazy, but Awesome!

If they're really looking for extreme they ought to just find (the "easy" part) the next big landslide in one of the Alaskan bays.

Those produce waves over 400 feet tall.

Really: http://www.extremescience.com/BiggestWave.htm

Yeah waiting two weeks in ice cold water for an 8 ft wave is pretty stupid... They should have used dynamite or mortared the glacier to break it apart.

In any event, better to surf the Pororoca Tidal Wave in Brazil! You know exactly when it'll come.

Actually they use some type of explosive to loosen the glacier. You F'in idiots think they actually sit around for two weeks and hope a piece falls, wake the F up. What would happen if the glacier fell at night? Think about it you retards.

Posted by: Conservative Joe | August 20, 2007 9:29 PM

Amazing the glaciers are melting so fast we can sit around a wait for them to break off and melt away to nothing. Keep voting for assclowns like Bush folks. He will protect us! WAKE UP

Posted by: AllgonnaDie | August 20, 2007 10:00 PM

Assclown, now there's a word. Especially from a loser like AllgonnaDie, There's another positive. I guess if Al Gore or John Kerry were voted in, then the glaciers would stop "breaking-off". Idiot, you should have your ability to comment revoked.

Posted by: steve | August 20, 2007 10:37 PM

Youre stupid!!! As anyone past third grade knows, glaciers actually are moving masses of ice, not frozen lakes that just sit there. So if they didnt melt and break off, you would end up with giant ice flows in California. Oh and I guess the whole global warming phenomena started in Bushs Presidency? Go take another private jet to some save gas convention and get your followers to drive their cars cross country to attend said convention thereby wasting more gas than if they would have just televised or had it over the internet!!!!! By the way those guys are so hardcore in everything they do that this is just one more thing they can put in their checklist of reasons they are not as wimpy as you!!!

Posted by: steve | August 20, 2007 10:48 PM

Hats Off to you guys. Awesome

Posted by: Mark | August 20, 2007 11:54 PM

lol, libs are the scourge of the world, and do nothing but slander, reason being the policy of liberals is so easily erroded away upon rational thought!

Take care guys,

God help us if Dems take control!

Posted by: UltraUber | August 21, 2007 12:11 AM

All you guys are stupid...

Remember...arguing online is like running in the Special Olympics; even if you win, you're still retarded.

Keep on arguing you homo's...someone might win.

Posted by: Kyle | August 21, 2007 12:13 AM

Those guys are glory hound homo's. They will do anything for the camera.

Posted by: BigJake | August 21, 2007 12:31 AM

That was freeken sweet!

Posted by: lorri | August 21, 2007 12:59 AM

Opps my bad you guys were right. Reread the article on foxnews and figured out they actually did wait two weeks for a glacier piece to fall off...

Sorry it's tough to read things properly - head gets way too far up my ass sometimes.

Let me know if there's a wayto correct this defect: scooterjoe@yahoo.com

Bush lied, ice glaciers died!

Posted by: Bocephus | August 21, 2007 5:37 AM

The only thing Bush lied about was that it was possible to reason rationally with liberals.

Cool video!

Posted by: Pete | August 21, 2007 6:17 AM

Yeah, fun vid. the comments at the end were better than the ride. Still, even with a tow it took some skill and a little luck to catch that bore.

Posted by: randal | August 21, 2007 7:50 AM

That was awesome!! These guys have big balls. What a thrill!!

Posted by: Will | August 21, 2007 10:28 AM

I would never do this...without a waterproof, heated codpiece.

Posted by: SGC | August 21, 2007 2:47 PM

This is what is called cool;
don't we all wish we could just go do something
instead of sitting in front a computer screen or TV complaining about things we know nothing about?

I have been around a very very long time and have seen politicians from Eisenhour to Bush 2 and let me tell you, the current crop of Democrats in power and their pie-in-the-sky liberal supporters are just totally out-to-lunch(using a more modern term).

Our country is attacked and they blame Bush,
when they conveniently forget that we had a half a dozen attacks on our embassies, ships, and World Trade Center in 1993, all during the Clinton administration.

Back to the point; getting out and doing SOMETHING
is the point.

The sad part that I see is that the people of our country have chosen one of two immovable sides. We tell each other how bad the other side is rather than trying to find common ground that will make all of our lives better. At 66 years old, I have never seen a sorier Congress or almost total lack of political leadership in our country. We better stop pointing and shouting and start working together.

Posted by: Smiffy1940 | August 21, 2007 6:57 PM

what the hell is wrong with you people? a video with some joker surfing is a political arena? Screw you dems AND you repubs, get a life go surf a glacial wave or something.....

Posted by: doc_simple | August 22, 2007 2:02 AM

Smiffy1940-
You are so right on. I would be willing to bet that 90-95% of the people in the US are moderate Democrat, Republican or Independant. And the "God's of Stereotyping" in politics, AM radio and TV are trying to create chaos in our great country. They are trying to divide us. When in fact almost all of us are so very close in our beliefs. Call these shock jock freak show AM radio thugs and tell them to go to hell.

Fill in the blank "The only thing better than surfing a glacier wave is ______________"
