16-year-old Hawaiian local Coco Ho won the trials to get into the Roxy Pro Sunset as a wildcard and then went on to beat world number one Stephanie Gilmore in the first round. Not bad going!
“Stephanie Gilmore is my ultimate hero,” Ho said. “It was the best experience to be able to surf with her, but I was so bummed that she wasn’t able to get a few good ones and put on a show for us and get me kicking. I wished her the best in Round 2 and I’m rooting for her for the World Title Race for sure all the way.”
Gilmore then went on to win her round two heat against Rochelle Ballard and Jacqueline Silva with the highest heat score of the day, meaning she is still in the running for the world title along with five other girls.
“My Round 2 heat was good", said Gilmore, "I felt like it was just another chance to get some more practice with my boards, Sunset can be pretty challenging.”
