Nails were bitten and fingers were crossed at the weekend, as two of the most valued comps in British surfing took place - the second Quiksilver Welsh National Championships and the Headworx English National Surfing Championships.

There's a reason why Newquay is dubbed the UK's surf capital; ten out of 23 titles on offer at the Watergate Bay, English event, were won by surfers from the seaside town. 16 year old Holly Donnelly was one of them, who shined in the three foot surf - despite losing the girls division to Cryode's Kathleen Spears, she won the Women's Open title, ahead of fellow Roxy surfer Sophie Hellyer, who came second.

In won the women's longboard, another UK Roxy team member Candice O'Donnell came first, followed by Sophie Skinner, Becky Stanhope and Kathryn Mepeoth; all were from Newquay.

Over in Freshwater West, Wales, another surf contest was taking place - but with a fiery Dragon's heart to their lion like cousins. Despite poor conditions at the beginning of the week - lack of surf and wind causing any that existed to mush up - on competition day entrants were treated to 6ft offshore waves and blue skies. The women maintained a super high level, with Jo Dennison taking first with the only 10 point ride of the whole event, within just minutes of getting in the water. Beth Mason followed, plus Briege Lawrence and Renee Godfrey.
