Joy Monahan lived up to her name on Wednesday when she took first place at the ASP Women's World Longboard championships at the Roxy Jam in Biarritz, France.

The second winner of the week from Oahu, Hawaii (fellow Hawaiian Carissa Moore won the Roxy Pro Juniors - see post), the 22 year old defeated runner-up Chelsea Williams of Australia's Gold Coast in a nail biting thirty minute final at the La Cote des Basques, with a 14.10 heat tally (out of a possible 20).

The most prestigious event in women's longboarding, Joy became the first Hawaiian female to take the crown after coming 9th in 2006 and 5th in 2007 - defeating reigning champ Jennifer Smith in the first semi final with a mix of classic and modern style in two foot, difficult conditions.

"I am super stoked, I cannot believe I won the championship", Monahan said. "Chelsea is one of the best surfers in the world and it was one of the most difficult heats to win. I got good waves and was very focused for the win."

"I was very surprised to defeat Jennifer (Smith) in the semi-finals", Monahan said. "I had a great week in Biarritz and it ends up perfectly. It is like a dream coming true and it is great to bring this world title home. So stoked."

22 year old Australian Chelsea Williams was the favourite to win the title, but was just pipped to the post by Joy into second - although bettering her 2007 third place.

"I won most of the heat, but Joy got two good ones in the dying seconds", Williams said. "I tried to take the bigger waves at the very end but it was not enough. I am still happy with my result and hope I can do better next year."

2007 champion Jennifer Smith lost her chances of a consecutive title when she was knocked out in the Semi Finals by Monahan, despite being an event top scorer with a 14.75 heat tally (out of a possible 20) from round .
"I guess I cannot win everything but I definitely enjoyed this contest", Smith said. "I will come back next year and try again. I was here for a repeat but Joy (Monahan) is an amazing surfer. She really deserves to be crowned champion."

I 've grew up surfing with Joy and its been amazing to watch her grow and succeed. All the "girls" knew that one day she would be World Champion, its was just a matter of time. She has a heart of gold and one the best friends anyone could hope for!! Congratulations Joy!
