All over the blogosphere, from street style sites to high fashion magazines, core snow cliques to mainstream news, Burton Snowboards unveiled the new US Olympic snowboard team uniform on December 7 - in advance of Vancouver 2010. And, in sharp contrast to other nations and the skiers in particular, the Vermont based company have given the team a distinct 'un-uniform' edge - in well worn denim plus a special red, white and blue plaid.

"The inspiration behind the U.S. Snowboarding Team outerwear for the 2010 Olympics is classic Americana," says Greg Dacyshyn, Senior Vice President of Creative at Burton.

"Although we are creating a uniform, our first objective is to express the individuality of snowboarding. As such, we are taking vintage American looks and interpreting them in a very unique and unexpected fashion.

"Finally, we will ensure that all of the highest technical attributes are maintained in the pieces, so that performance and function are not jeopardized. The result will be a progressive and fresh look that challenges the former conservatism of the Olympics."

It may look cotton casual, but don't be deceived: the jacket and pants outerwear combo is fully water and windproof, using GORE-TEX®, apparently 'the official fabric of the 2010 U.S. Snowboarding Team's Olympic outerwear.'

Managing to straddle both patriotic and street-influenced factors for the Games, the set also features the USA team patch, and eagle anchored crest - and the Burton logo of course. With feedback from their own team of riders, many of who are set to dominate the Halfpipe contest at the Olympics, including Elena Hight, Mason Aguirre, Danny Davis, Kevin Pearce, Jack Mitrani, Luke Mitrani, Steve Fisher, Scotty Lago and Louie Vito, the 'uniforms' are a bona fide team effort. Although, even though Burton also clothing the Chinese and Finnish teams, don't expect any more lumberjack types to be hucking the pipe in February.
