"I never wanted to surf like a girl," smiles five-times World Champion surfer 64-year-old Linda Benson, "But now it's different... they're really good!"
Featuring interviews with ten female surfers, aged 17 to 64, and footage - old and new - from across the globe Mexico to Hawaii, California to France, The Women and The Waves is an inspiring investigation into the history of women in surfing.
The brain child of Executive Producer, Heather Hudson, she was one of five subjects from all different backgrounds in Peck Euwer's (of Swell Pictures) raw 2005 documentary on surf addiction, The Craving. The only woman in the film, Hudson was inspired to continue her story and explore surfing 'from the feminine perspective' - enlisting Peck as co-producer.
Ten women are interviewed about their wave riding experience in depth: from the legendary Linda, who began surfing at age 11, to 50-year-old longboarder Robin Janiszeufski-Hesson 'Zeuf' who surfs Santa Cruz daily, despite a battle with cancer.
17-year-old Rachel Harris also stars, who's deciding between college or chasing the pro career dream, and 22-year old big wave charger Shakira Westdorp - who drops into monster waves at Waimea Bay, on the North Shore of O'ahu.
Out now, you can buy it on DVD direct from thewomenandthewaves.com for $25.
