For any other pro, it'd bring on a severe wrist slapping from the sponsors and possible drop: but when Dane Reynolds wore a tee by Kid Creature - the brainchild of 11 year old Calvin Saxton - on the podium at the Hurley Pro, it was applauded....
A fellow Newport Beach local, Saxton's been doodling since he was teeny - and an obsessive surfer since he moved from Arizona, aged 3 - Kid Creature combines both loves, while donating 10% of profits to fight Cystic Fibrosis.
But the big story started when family friend and local pro Andrew Doheny donned one of Kid Creature's tees on a filming surf trip to Nicaragua - invited by Dane Reynolds no less.
Surfing's It boy was intrigued with both the tees and the grom's story due to his own attempts at creating naive chid-like art. So on the next trip, Doheny took some Kid Creature tees out to Dane, and the superstar surfer and his pre-pubescent, creative fan struck up a friendship. Surfing and collaborating where possible.
"I started putting my art on T-shirts because my dad's neighbour had a shirt printer and I wanted to make a gift for my friends," says Calvin. "I get inspiration from looking at random things, and I will keep the idea in my head 'til I have a pencil and paper." Now, thanks to the blogosphere, word on Kid Creature has spread globally and the blonde grom as a huge collection of illustrated threads, to ship worldwide, and worn by a plethora of pros such as Alex Knost, Claire Bevilaqua, Christian Yeager and more.
