Did you know that 1 in 8 people don't have acces to clean drinking water? Pro surfer Jon Rose knew, so had enough of just giving stickers and t-shirts out on surf trips to developing communities.

So on his next trip to Sumatra in September 2009, he took along ten water filters to give to locals. Then an earthquake hit...
Jon's simple plan became much more, as he gave his filters to rescue workers, and realised the huge impact something so small could have on lives. Waves For Water was born - inspired by his father, Jack Rose, who'd started the non-profit organisation Rain Catcher, which educates villages in Africa on how to catch and filter rainwater.

Shortly after, disaster hit Haiti with a devastating earthquake that killed over 200 000 people and injured another 250,000. Jon quickly acted to team up with actor Sean Penn to work with the UN to distribute water filters from military bases to tragedy hit communities.

So far they've brought 11,000 small, portable filters to Haiti (clean water for more than 100,000 people) and Waves For Water is now working with communities in Pakistan, Chile, Indonesia, Japan and more.

As Bob Hurley, founder of Hurley International says:

"There are people who die from not having clean water, little kids... it's just tragic. Twenty dollars can give a family clean water for a year. Who doesn't have $25? You go to Starbucks and spend that."
