There's nothing risque, but it does seem like soft porn for the male readers. Then, having gone bikini shopping in February pre a winter-surf trip - and struggled - Surfing's Swimsuit Special could also be aimed at female readers like moi too, as the shots are gorgeous. Although, I'd be ogling the location and bikinis rather than their contents.
Sadly, having seen many a hot female athlete swapped for a model on style shoots, I think it's the former, bit boring, sexist industry cliche; I know I'd rather see a suit in action in the sea, rather than taped and pinned on a perfectly planned pose.

Surfer and board; human and landscape; photographer and subject; surfer to surfer: in her latest book, Surfland, photographer Joni Sternbach has collated her incredible portraits of californian surfers in situ at their local breaks, created using the vintage technique tintype.]]>
Joni's portraits are striking, timeless and utterly beautiful - but the tintype technique hasn't changed much since the 1850s.
According to Wikipedia, images are made by: "creating a direct positive on a sheet of iron metal that is blackened by painting, laquering or enamelling and is used as a support for a collodion photographic emulsion."
One of several projects that Joni's working on with these vintage, creative but cumbersome cameras, she's also working on documenting seascapes and ocean details - which have an eery, otherworldly feel.

Surfer, writer, guitarist, songwriter and TV host Jodie Nelson is about to add another accomplishment to her CV: that of courageous long distance water woman as she undergoes an epic and gruelling stand up paddle boarder journey to raise money for research and awareness into the fight against breast cancer.

Surfside local Jodie has set herself the mission to stand up paddle a distance of 39.8 miles at the end of March 28, at 10am - from the island of Catalina to California's Dana Point - the same as 705 football fields.
"I'm tired of sitting around, feeling like there is nothing I can do," says Nelson. "I know that paddling almost 40 miles isn't going to heal my friend or cure cancer, but I know that I can make a stand against this terrible disease that affects so many people. And I am determined to raise money towards research, education, and prevention!"
It's an epic journey she's attempted once before - but in relay which took 8 hours and 52 minutes - and said she'd never do again. However she's been inspired to swallow her words and face this tremendous challenge for others and to fight breast cancer - a disease which has affected her mother and aunt, who both thankfully survived, plus now a close friend is also battling the disease. Only three of four men have attempted this challenge solo - one being Stand Up Paddle Boarding grandfather Laird Hamilton, and Jarad Vargas.
"I'm setting out to do something that is, for me, super intimidating, unknown, and something that I have a good chance of failing at. But that doesn't mean that I shouldn't do it! This isn't about me. People battling cancer go through similar feelings that are magnified to a much grander scale. They are battling a life threatening disease that is intimidating and unknown to them."
Jodie's aiming to raise $50,000 for her gruelling one-woman mission - which will be shared between the Keep A Breast Foundation and Boarding For Breast Cancer. A couple of weeks ago I was at one of the funnest contests I've had the pleasure of attending since the French all-female comp Intergirlaktik sadly called it quits: the Sista Sessions in Mayrhofen, Austria. Super mellow, encouraging and supportive, the event was sponsored by Skull Candy, Billabong and Vans, and organised by TTR PR Whizz Viola Burnett.

Urška Pribošič in particular who won, plus a big representation for the local scene, with Tini Gruber coming second, plus Innsbruck residents Julia Baumgartner, Conny Bleicher and more making the drive up the valley. The Brits also stomped through, with Scottish powerhouse Claire Frost coming third with her huge 720 spins, plus locals Helen Fox, Charlie A Witts and Sophie Addison, and Morzine-based Eka wear owner Gilly Seagrave and young gun Stefani Nurding.

The snowy slopes of Mayrhofen, Austria glimmered in the sunshine as 50 girls from thirteen different countries gathered for the Skullcandy Sista Sessions. In one action-packed day the participants could join in on various activities: beginner lessons, small jam sessions and photo shoots, while the main focus was on the 3Star Swatch TTR Slopestyle competition.
It was 19-year old up and coming ripper from Slovenia Urška Pribošič who deservedly took the top spot on the podium, while local Zillertal girl Chirstina "Tini" Gruber came in second and Claire Frost (GBR) in third. The title of best non-sponsored rider and a one-year clothing sponsorship with Billabong Girls went to the delighted Argentinean Chani Michaux who placed 13th.

The Vans Penken Park was groomed to perfection and consisted of two sets of rails and boxes, an 11m kicker followed by a 14m kicker. Urska's super stylish winning run started off with a 50/50 on the top rail, a backside boardslide to frontside boardslide on the flat down box, then a huge backside 360 tailgrab on the Billabong kicker and a frontside 540 on the Skullcandy kicker that sealed her victory. Riding against some of Europe's top-notch riders like Liza Filzmoser (AUT) and Basa Stevulova (SVK), Urška was happy and overwhelmed by her win "I can't believe it because all the girls were riding so good. I'm stoked!" She had made her way to the invite list by winning the Skullcandy Sista Sessions Video Clip Contest, so a double victory for Urška!
Urška Pribošič Tini, who finished closely in second showed her skills on her home stomping ground with a backside boardslide to fakie and a 270 frontboard in the rail section to a big frontside 360 and stylish a backside 540 on the kickers. Claire nailed a solid run consisting of a frontside boardslide, gap 50/50, front side 360 melon grab and a huge backside 360. The happy top 5 riders all walked away with cheques and a pair of brand new Skullcandy headphones.

The riding seen in the park impressed Head Judge Nina Rydelek, "We had a very good level on both rails and kickers. The girls really pushed each other to try 720's, we have a good rookie winner and all the girls who went through the qualification really stepped it up against the invited riders." The top 3 girls won a place on the invited riders list of the 3Star Oakley Girlsessions in Ruka, Finland from 8-11 April 2010, while the top 5 are invited to the 3Star Shred Down Austrian Masters.
Urška Pribošič The Skullcandy Sista Sessions stayed true to its roots and included all levels of girls snowboarding with pro and the up-and-coming riders side by side. Also the beginners had the chance to learn all sorts of basic tricks with the guiding hand of the local SMT Snowboard School in the "Sweet Dream - Newbie Zone" and afterwards showed off their newly learned skills winning armfuls of prizes during the beginner box jam session. One of the stars of the day was 7-year old Annika Morgen (AUT), who was the youngest participant of the day and was killing it!
The busy chill zone featured a Christa Leonard photo exhibition brought to us by our sponsor Les Ettes and the popular waffle stand from Vans. Finally a "Hot chocolate Box Jam Session", presented by Billabong, ended the day in style. It's a long way from the quirky squeak of Joanna Newsom's attention grabbing single The Sprout and The Bean from her debut albumThe Milk Eyed Mender: the bare simplicity is still there - focusing mainly on harp and voice - with the addition of a spattering of drums and wind.
After the ambitious 12-minute epics of previous album, 2006's Ys, and now 28, Newsom's polished and progressed into a bona-fide composer. Her voice is no longer a hindrance too, and while still holding it's naive charm, her unique vocals fly and fill entire stadiums from a lilt to croon.
Much anticipated, Have One On Me, available for pre-order from Drag City records, is already one of the album's of 2010 - if not the decade: a collection of curious and gorgeous song cycles, soaked in emotion, narrative and magical wonder at the world - keeping Kate Bush's eccentric soprano songstress torch burning. Combine Newsom's aural pleasure with waist deep fresh powder, an untracked forest and bluebird skies, and, for me, that sounds like heaven.

With their latest Eden girl, Jessica Mau of Ford Models (umm, sorry, but wasn't the Eden Advocate program meant to be anti models?) the mini movies were filmed at the Vasquez Rocks national park, North Los Angeles County, by Ricki Bedenbaugh.
