This short clip was created by Rest Your Eyes Productions as part of a larger 40 minute documentary on Australia's bohemian Byron Bay. Touchingly simple, Lina - who's spent six years travelling the globe with just her surfboard for company - just attached a camera to her log's nose on a gloriously crowd-free surf, stitched together by Rest Your Eyes.

This season the Vans and Ride team rider launched PS - a series of tasty, pow soaked snowboarding videos featuring herself and friends like Leanne Pelosi, Robin Van Gyn and co. I've finally managed to catch up with her webisodes for episode 8 - Mind The Gap - where Hana and crew head to Mount Baker, Washington, after some chill time in Salt Lake City, to clock some serious backcountry footage - aka a damn impressive road gap alongside Pat McCarthy, Lucas Debari, Alex Yoder, Nate Lind and Wyatt Stasinos.

Photographer Crista Leonard personifies free spirited, bohemian creativity - growing up between Andorra, Switzerland and the South of France, travel and nature are in her blood, seeping into her ethereal analog images, of fairy tale mountains and cinematic city streets.

The Barcelona based talent studied a masters in photography at the same art college I attended, (Goldsmiths, University of London), but I first met her at ISPO a few years ago. 

Spotted by Les Ettes to be the face of their fragrance Want Ette, she was already en route to being a shred-industry it-girl. Gifted and impeccably stylish, usually that'd have given the green eyed monster an excuse to hijack my brain. But chilled, unpretentious, with a impish cheeky grin and total passion for her art, Crista totally charmed. That, plus the incredible portfolio she eagerly showed off was packed with powerful prints of her magical images, evoking fairy tales, mountain myths and unspoken modern mysteries.

Now focusing on fashion and lifestyle shoots, Crista has been published globally, recently featured in the Nixon art-mosh exhibition at ISPO Munich, is an ambassador for Element Eden, and just created a snowboard goggle for Spy. Keep an eye on her, as it's only time before she blows up into a global photo star. Find out more in our In Focus interview below: 


When did you first pick up a camera?

Crista: I know I always had a camera with me on school trips, because I have a stash of photos of animals from zoo trips and people in really nineties clothing but I think I picked one up for more 'artistic' purposes when I started taking 'Art' more seriously. So, at 15 I guess?

What photo are you most proud of and why?

I wouldn't say proud, but I would say that I like this photo [below], and keep going back to it. I like that I caught her hair when the wind was blowing, that the sun catches her hair too, that she seems pensive (probably cursing me for how freezing it was): I just like it. I don't think I've ever felt proud of specific photos, but sometimes I'm proud of a series.

What photo has moved you most - whether personal or famous?

Hmmmm nothing that sticks actually, I constantly see photos that I love, but nothing that I would desperately want to buy and have on my wall. I love this one by Cass Bird though, I love mischief:

Favourite place in the world to shoot?

Who'd be your dream person to portrait - alive or dead?

Hmm I can't remember what I answered to this last time, consistency clearly isn't my forte! Oh well, today I feel like I would love to shoot Dennis Hopper, what's not to love about him.

Favourite camera and why?

Right now my favourite camera is my Nikon FE2. I love it because we've been through so much together, but on a technical level I love it's reliability, it's sturdiness, it's beauty...

Why do you take photographs?

Because I can't think of doing anything else, it gives me a purpose which satisfies me and makes my day AWESOME.

Future photography hopes, plans and dreams?

Always get better, continue doing personal projects, live in New York, live in Portland, live in Berlin, travel all over the planet and most importantly, continue being able to work as a photographer!

Could the 2012 Women's ASP World Championship host the most progressive year of surfing ever? As the Roxy Pro Gold Coast kicks off the new tour in Australia, it's looking likely as the tour's finest contest surfers - including four-time champion Stephanie Gilmore, current title-holder and defending event champ Carissa Moore, plus fellow phenoms Laura Enever, Tyler Wright, Coco Ho, Sally Fitzgibbons and Malia Manuel - start the season with some incredible, stylish surfing.  

With the surf dropping off at Snapper Rocks, today the Roxy Pro Gold Coast's on a lay day, after four impressive days of peak-summer surfing to establish the final eight surfers of the event. And there's been some big surprises: like Australian grom Tyler Wright, 17, knocking out superstar Carissa in round four, after clocking the contest's highest scoring wave - a 9.6 - heat 1 of the quarterfinals.

"I knew I had to do something big to beat her," Wright said. "She's the ASP World Champ. I think she won three events last year so I knew it was going to be tough. I was lucky enough that I got the good waves. If she got them she would have smashed me too."

After her champion-beating performance, Wright will now surf against fellow Aussie and Nike-sponsored surf it-girl Laura Enever, 20, in the upcoming semi-finals when the Roxy Pro Gold Coast resumes later this week.


Roxy golden girl Sally Fitzgibbons, 21, also charged in yesterday's Quarterfinals - taking 17 total points to eliminate ASP tour newcomer Malia Manuel of Hawaii, 18, who left the contest as the highest placed rookie, with 12 total wave points.

"That was a really good result to start the year off," Fitzgibbons said. "Yesterday I was struggling with my board choice and wave selection and it's good to fix that up. It was really nice out there with really fun waves. I'm feeling fired up. I'm still finding my feet after having not too much surfing time in the off season with a wrist injury, but it's all coming together and I'm looking forward to the Semifinals."

Competition should resume at the weekend - with a feisty semi-final heat between Sally and Stephanie also lined up, after Steph's close quarterfinal heat against Courtney Conlogue, winning with 16.77 total points over the Californian's 16.30. 

With these two pairings, plus 2 - 3 foot swell forecast for Sunday, the finals should be a thrilling start to the new contest season. Well worth the early start for us Euros - or late night in the US - to get excited about summer.

Damn, how we've missed them, but after a two year break glitchy, goth-pop wonderkids Crystal Castles have returned with a more polished, beautiful and glacial sound.

First single Suffocation saw it's official video released today, which is sees front woman Alice Glass star in her first (video) fashion shoot -  dressed in Stella McCartney, Chanel, Carven, Falke and J Gerard no less. Created by VS magazine it's a dark dream filmed in a deserted mansion in NYC. (much like an early Marilyn Manson video - albeit with a female looky-likey - ala cinematic genius Floria Sigismondi)

After the raw verocity and power of their debut record, plus fame and cash taking the edge of any creative anger, the second Crystal Castles record will undoubtedly be a more mainstream affair. Playing up to the Canadian duet's pop abilities, expect something more subtle, spacious and haunting - with the jarring riffs and spitting lyrics replaced with something more refined and gorgeous. 

Either way, I'm super excited by new Crystal Castles material - capturing the post-recession zeitgeist with a soundtrack for lost young souls. And, any band named after a lyric from a song in She Ra has tapped right into my 80s kid soul.

There's a lorra love for East London's Lazy Oaf here at Nollie HQ - and with their 90s inspired spring summer 2012 collection, we're crushing just that bit harder. 

The brainchild of designer/illustrator Gemma Shiel, the indie label started in 2001 as a small East London market stall, selling hand screen printed tees. Now, the brand is in 150 stockists worldwide and famed for quirky tees, reversible sweats and cute printed dresses - with bags, jewellery and stationary stuff too. 

Still designed by Gemma, she now has a full Lazy Oaf family, including studio assistant, f  with a fully loaded team of Alexandra Jackson, accountant (and Gemma's mum?) Gill Shiel, stock and event manager Shevone Muriel Bliss and PR lady Jerry O'Sullivan.

Like a celestial ray of joy out of the grunge-inspired darkness of last winter, Lazy Oaf's new season lookbook is pretty damn chipper - with tropical fruit, characters and graphics straight out of a Commodore 64, adorning their new threads. Simple and gritty, their latest lookbook is also shot by east-london dahling Bella Howard.

As the UK deepfreeze thaws, and first whiffs of stale body odour, flat pints and porta-loos waft into your memories with the first festival announcements, Monday Music Club returns to warm your bones with slightly fresher slices of audio pleasure from St Vincent and Grimes.

I've already professed my passion for not-so-holy St Vincent - and, it seems I'm in well-heeled company as fashionista broadcast-bible Gossip Girl features the band tonight (Monday). The special valentines episode, where Blair reveals a big surprise for Serena apparently, will be on boxes in the US at 8/7c on CW Television. Or watch the band below: 


For some slightly more credible tuneage, visual/musical artists Grimes has music blogs frothing over her 'revolutionary' (Gorilla vs Bear) new album Visions - which is streaming at NPR. If you're not familiar, Grimes is the stage name of 23 year old DJ, artists and producer Claire Boucher - who's released two full-length albums and her acclaimed Darkbloom split EP (with d'Eon) since 2010.

A Vancouver, Canada native who migrated to Montreal, Quebec to soak up the city's creative DIY loft scene, Grimes' was nurtured by indie label Arbutus, to release her laptop created compositions of spectral vocal hoops, nocturnal bleeps and evil effects on to the world.

Visions is Grimes third album, and first for new label home 4AD (also home to St Vincent) packed with psychadleic goth-pop and glitchy synths layered with trademark pubescent vocals - all faux childlike tone, and a refusal to use words, looping vowel noises, screeches and pure sound instead. Perfect for long cold nights in grimy clubs, or melancholy no-valentine moping.

From the gutter to the stars (aherm) also in music today, your dad's favourite warbler Adele cleaned up at the Grammy winning five gongs in the biggest US industry fest on Sunday night - including the hugely prestigious Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. (Wanna know what Adele wore? Read our sister blog Catwalk Queen for full Grammys fash).

Also on the evening, Nicki Minaj stirred up middle america by strutting on stage with a lookalike of The Pope before performing new tune Roman Holiday - complete with full-on The Exorcist tribute. And, with Whitney Houston's shocking watery death, tributes abound with Jennifer Hudson belting a tearful version of I Will Always Love You in her honour. 

But, the big-buttocked popstrel was no match for indie's favourite tear jerker as our beloved Bon Iver beat her, plus emo-kid gone dubstep king Skrillex, to win the Best New Artist Gong. Sometimes there is justice in the world.

From burly street rails, hucking off huge backcountry bootes, flying up wall rides, to flying one legged off, plus a catalogue of eye-watering stacks, this Nike and Volcom sponsored BC native is damn ballsy - enough to make some guys feel 'emasculated' after watching these two minutes. omehow, despite being madly in love with the first episode of Endless Roads (Yellow Horizons) with the Longboard Girls Crew we managed to miss this second chapter - The Island - where the ladies take a ferry across the channel to shred Mallorca. 

Once again filmed by the incredibly talented Juan Rayos, the second chapter in this sunny slice of skate cinema sees the 7 females-strong troup explore and shred the rocky island. 

Captured in glorious HD colour, the ladies pick up some new friends and local rippers to session some sketchy downhill steeps. Particularly beautiful is from 10 minutes in, when a local shaper lends the ladies some gorgeous larger sticks, perfect for beachside, surf-style carving, hang tens and longboard ballet. 

Love love love: bring on the defrost and getting back on four wheels at dusk in shorts...

]]> First up the ubiquitous Lana Del Ray. Love or loathe the sultry Los Angelean, on Monday the most hyped record of the year finally dropped. So far it's rocketed to top music sales (although in a quiet releases week) - despite her lacklustre live performances in the US.

Personally I don't get it. Yep, Lana Del Ray is gorgeous. Her image team have done an impressive job combining just enough glamour, street edge and pure prettiness to create the most cross-appeal artist (visually) possible.  But, musically I find her droning Nancy Sinatra tunes rather dull. It's like Portishead with the raw emotion and ghostly hooks stripped away, with some fluffy 60s MOR lass on vocals - and the speed turned down. Yes, the Lynch-like atmospherics are kinda cool and alluring. But I can stop thinking about DJ groupies dosed up on Ketamine. Or lift music in an OAP home, styled by Urban Outfitters. Sadcore for sure.
 
Loads of my lad friends are infatuated and get incredibly defensive when I voice my thoughts 
on Ms Ray. But with her breathy bedside-manner vocals and those 'cushioned' lips something tells me it's not their brains dictating a love for Lana...  Jealous? Maybe, but I also want a Red Bull buzz from my music - not Horlicks narcolepsy. 


After the zzz-inducing hype machine, I need of a sugar hit to get me through the week: enter The 2 Bears - side project of Hot Chip's Joe Goddard and DJ Raf Rundell, and a glorious gay-clubland inspired house party fest. Tongue in cheek, feel good and uplifting, the pair swing between being a serious beat-making duo, to self-piss-taking comedians - upbeat dance to lazy funk. It's nowt original or outstanding, but The 2 Bears are a cheeky slice of sun in these dark dreary days.  


Want something weird? Try the Edinburgh-born, Dalston-living electro quirk of Django Django - who's self-titled album is out today. The eccentric outpourings of former art student Django Reindhart and friends it's a DIY hotchpotch of influences and styles to keep you on your toes - a touch of the Beta Band, electro-pop ala Hot Chip, to the chaotic robot chorus in single Default, deep harmonies, throbbing baselines in Waveform, to Beach Boys styleee surf pop in Life's A Beach. With song titles like that, at a triple caffeinated psychedelic pace, Django Django is already the soundtrack to our (daydreamed) summer.


On the singles front the always compelling The Kills release Last Goodbye, to celebrate their tenth anniversary - with a Samantha Morton directed video - so our girl crush on Alison Mosshart continue way into festival season (even if we do prepare her blues-rock-Janis-Joplin-resurrection style in The Dead Weather). Pixie Lott also releases her sugary space-pop single Kiss The Stars.

It's here: four times ASP World Champion Surfer Steph Gilmore meets minds and talks movement with New Yorks' finest dancers in Quiksilver Women's latest project - short film The Water Dancer, which launched this week.

Perhaps not as deep as I hoped, the trilogy of short videos sees the 22-year-old Sydney Surf superstar compare her 'performing art' with these fellow physical professionals - to create a cross-cultural comparison between the disciplines.

Similarities appear more than differences, as Steph discusses creativity, spontaneity, body memory, entertaining and expression with choreographer and artistic director Noemie Lafrance, New York City Ballet principal ballerina Tiler Peck, plus bonds over being in a man's world and competing with breakdancer Casandra 'Defy' Rivera.

With each dancer Gilmore learns their art - and shares her passion for her own, surfing, as some seriously infectious cross-inspiring goes on. Each dancer also sees Steph's vision to remain one of the planet's most powerful and full charging surfers, but maintain her femininity and bring something new, fluid and artistic to her wave riding.

In October Nollie featured the work of talented young surf, snow and travel photographer Meg Haywood Sullivan - which had an incredible response (almost 150 shares on Facebook before our relaunch). So who better to kick off our Thursday In Focus interviews - a weekly series of words and wisdom from young photographers?

Fresh from a photoshoot in Oregon, the 22-year old talent - based out of Bozeman, Montana - answered our questions on how she began image making, inspirations, art, heroes and advice for wannabe photogs. Read on for her pearls and to see her gifted cinematic eye....

When did you first pick up a camera?
Meg: I was born into a family of artists and photographers. I've had a camera in hand my whole life, but some of my first memories of taking photographs are from when I was 8 years old. At 10 years I started to learn how to develop my own film.

What photo are you most proud of and why?
I took a shot of my friend Aaron Robinson last spring in this secret pillow zone in southwestern Montana. Aaron passed away this past summer in a snowboarding accident in Chile, but this shot can't help but put a huge smile on my face every time I see it. In the photo he is backlit doing a massive stalefish amongst this endless pillowland, a moment so peaceful, pure, and full of stoke. (See the photo here)


Who are you favourite photographers and/or inspirations?

What advice would you give wannabe photographers?
Get out there and shoot! Whether camera in hand or not constantly be composing shots. Look through the magazines and think about how the photographer composed the photograph, where the lighting is coming from, and what the exposure would be. It feels pretty cool that reading snowboard and surf magazines is like research.

What photo has moved you the most?

Favourite place on the planet to shoot?
Tough one: from Mali to Mexico, British Columbia to my home in southwestern Montana - I love traveling and shooting where ever the adventure (and snow) takes me.

Who'd be your dream to portrait - alive or dead?
Marilyn Monroe the ultimate ideal of beauty. She was photographed by so many people, it would be a fun challenge as a photographer to be able to make a unique portrait of her.

Favourite camera?
As much as I love my Nikon D700, my favorite camera is by far my Mamiya RZ67. I like the mindset of working with medium film. Slowing down to take more time thinking about and composing each shot to make it count. Digital is so fast, especially shooting action sports, so it's a refreshing change and challenge to work with the Mamiya.

Why do you take photographs?
Photographing is an outlet to tell stories and inspire new ways of looking at the world. A single image can be incredibly powerful and moving, I strive for this in each picture I take.

Future photography hopes, plans and dreams?
I'm in the process of living my dream right now! I just quit my day job and am living 100% off my photography. I want to continue pushing the limits with my images, constantly learning and experimenting. I really admire the modern day photojournalist and hope myself to make images that are multidimensional and have more meaning than mere aesthetics.

As the bar gets continuously raised in freestyle snowboarding and skiing - so does the risk: first shown by the Kevin Pearce's near fatal head injury on new year's eve 2009 - and now by X Games superpipe gold medallist freeskier Sarah Burke, who's suffered a head injury and is currently in critical condition after crashing (eerily) in the same Park City Mountain Resort halfpipe.

Sarah maybe a skier, but at the pinnacle of progression and pushing female riding forwards, she's very fondly thought of in the sideways snow community too. A Roxy and Smith pro rider, Sarah is the most successful female freeskier ever - winning eight Winter X Games medals, including four golds. Competing in pipe since 2000, she's been at the forefront of pushing women to be represented in ski pipe at the Olympics - which will debut in 2014.

The Canadian's crash happened on Tuesday afternoon at about 1pm, where she suffered a serious head injury, after riding the halfpipe at Park City in Utah during training with her Monster Energy team mates, reports powder.com:

Around 1 p.m., she landed a trick off of the wall on her feet at the bottom of the pipe, but then "whiplashed" over onto her side, according to person who witnessed the accident. She was obviously injured, said the witness, who spoke to Powder.com on condition of anonymity. Ski patrol stabilized her at the scene of the accident and transported her to the base of the mountain...

Sarah, 29, was then airlifted to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City - where she has remained in a critical condition. 

Shocking, but sadly not uncommon, we hope this pionering woman bounces back to full health from the crash soon - and our thoughts are with her and her family. Watch the above video, an excerpt from the movie Winter, to find out more about this inspiring individual.

Below is the official statement from Sarah Burke's family releases yesterday:

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke was transported by AirMed helicopter to University of Utah Hospital from Park City Mountain Resort after sustaining serious injuries during training. She is currently listed in critical condition in the hospital's Neuro Critical Care Unit.

"Sarah sustained serious injuries and remains intubated and sedated in critical condition," according to Safdar Ansari, M.D., a neurointensivist with University of Utah Health Care.

Sarah's husband Rory Bushfield and her family are by her bedside and wish to express their sincere thanks to everyone, all over the world, for their heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. "Sarah is a very strong young woman and she will most certainly fight to recover," said Rory.
