New fixie bike magazine Fixed launches in London

Fixed_magazine_first_issue

When something is described as 'like surfing or snowboarding but you can do it outside your front door in London' I'm listening. This was how fixed gear bikes were first described to me back in March, but having not had a chance to ride one, I just trusted this friends opinion. That was until I went to the launch party for the first international magazine dedicated 100% to fixie bikes, Fixed, in Hackney, London on Saturday; now I completely agree - fitting as in the UK, it's national bike week.

Booze, bikes and beards filled Carhartt's East London warehouse store, as fans of fixies congregated to celebrate the mag with music courtesy of DJ Jay Stephenson, a premiere of movie the Bootleg Sessions 2, comps plus pick up free copies.

Available for free in bike shops across the world - currently London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles - you will also be able to download a PDF of the publication for free from www.fixed-mag.com very soon.

I could explain what a fixed gear bike is - but Wikipedia's description is far better than anything I can do. The Fixed Gear Gallery and Fixed Gear London will give you an idea too.

Ok, I know the link to surfing, snowboarding and skating is tenous now - but trust us; ex pro skaters and snowboarders are already hooked on these back-to-basics machines, which means the rest of us are bound to follow; in a year or two we'll all be riding a new bike. Keep an eye out on Nollie for news and shiny new bikes to get you stoked on cycling soon..

SurfGirl vs. Cooler: new summer issues out now

New_mags_out_now

Brand new issues of two of our fave mags are out now: the Summer issues of Cooler and Surf Girl. Both out now which one should you spend your hard earned money on? Nollie has a look inside...

Here's what's in the new issue of Cooler:

All about Evelien: the talented Belgian skater talks fear, the X Games and how injuries suck.

Dub be good to me: an ode to VW Camper vans.

Toes on the nose: everything you need to know about longboarding.

The bicycle diaries: people and places in South America as seen from the saddle.

Fix me up: the lowdown on fixed gear cycling.

Board to be green: elite surfer Elise Garrigue and her eco surfboard.

Winter in Wanaka: chasing the endless winter in NZ.

Fashion: this season’s trends shot in Cape Town and the summer’s most stylish swimwear.

Plus lots more...

And Surf Girl? This month, issue 18, look forward to:

Who is Lisa Andersen?: She’s widely considered to be the woman with it all: looks, talent, World Championship titles, the surfing-icon-for-a-generation label, but life hasn’t always been so easy for Lisa. Her new biography, Fearlessness, describes the life of a woman who hasn’t always made the best decisions but has made the most out of what life has thrown at her. Louise Searle interviews the enigmatic Ms Andersen.

Groms in the Banana Republic: What happens when you take a bunch of under 18’s and let them loose on a Caribbean island? Mayhem! Luckily some surfing went down as well, under the watchful eye of surf vet Robyn Davies and SurfGirl Assistant Ed Kat Dawes. Here’s Kat’s report on an eventful two weeks in the sun.

Women and surfing: Do women belong in the bedroom or the barrel? This is what Billabong rider Jessi Miley-Dyer asked herself after spending a week on a boat in Indo.
After the Tour finished last year a crew of pros decided that they needed to cut loose for a bit and booked a trip to Micronesia. Typically, they pulled out all the stops, ripping as good as it gets and it got Jessi thinking about the perception of women in the surfing world.

Best of British: Why look elsewhere when it can be so good under your nose? Sometimes just getting in your car and heading out on the open road can bring as many adventures as a week in crowded Tarazoute. Read up on SurfGirl’s guide to the best UK surf towns.

Pipeline Queen: How easy does it look paddling out at Pipeline, camera in hand to shoot some of the world’s top surfers? Lucia Griggi tells us what it takes to be a professional surf photographer, warts and all!

Plus Hotties, fashion, happenings and loads more.

What do you think? Surf Girl is obviously for the core surfer - obsessed with riding waves, not snow or street, packed with surf focused fashion, epic travel, in depth interviews, health, beauty and fit pro surf lads. Cooler, if you like, is the older sibling, widening their options not just to surfing, skating and snowboarding - but also to other inner city trends they're more likely to be able to do at home, in addition to edgier fashion, snip bits of music, culture and art, in addition to an awareness of green issues.

Frankly I love 'em both; but what do you think?

Flow female MTB camps announced!

Mtb1
There's something rather special about getting covered in mud, weaving down steep mountain trials, engaging mind over matter at maximum speed on two wheels, then laughing till your sides split with like minded ladies.

Wether you're already hooked, or are an intermediate looking to progress, FlowMTB are about to start their third summer of women only mountain biking trips in the Alps. From their base in stunning Champery, 90 minutes from Geneva, on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil region, the weeks will take over the Rose des Alpes Hotel for the week of August 2 to 9.

Mtb2_2

With training run by Masters World Downhill Champion Petra Wiltshire - sponsored by the Trek-Extreme Medics Racing Team presented by thecyclejersey.com and with twelve years of racing experience - the week is not for the faint hearted, as she will push you beyond the limits you thought you were capable of... and then take you around the town's bars afterwards.

As well as improving your two wheeled abilities, the week promises to make you friends for life and improve confidence - as your progressing with other like minded, similarily motivated women. A rest day is planned mid week too: so you'll be able to recharge in a local spa, via a mountain hike or just keep riding...

Cost of the week is a bargainous 800 Euros - which includes accomodation, food, six day lift pass, guiding tuition and airport transfers.

So if you're keen log on to flowmtb.com/ or call organiser Sara on +44 (0308) 123 5664 or the +33 (0) 688 101 757.

Brit BMX girl for gold in Bejing

Shanaze_reader_copy
We're usually the last people to take note of a story in middle England newspaper Daily Mail, but this piece on Shanaze Reade caught our eye.

Described as a 'teenage tearaway' by the tabloid (cringe!), the 19-year-old from Crewe could be one of the first BMXers to win an Olympic gold medal - as the sport joins the Games this summer in Bejing.

Five reasons why you should take up action sports now

Reasons_to_take_up_surfingImage: Roxy

If you're just reading this blog as an armchair action sports enthusiast, here's five reasons why you should get up off your arse and give one of them a go...

1. Ban boredom. When you've got a board of some description to get on, I can guarantee you'll never utter the dreaded b word again.
2. Travel. Be it surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding or mountain biking, you'll get to go places you might never have discovered otherwise.
3. Body benefits. Get on a snowboard and your thighs won't know what's hit 'em. Most extreme activities are also a fast track way to ban the wobbly bits, and it's fun!

4. Adrenaline. This stuff is the best drug around, and it's as good as free. You'll soon be addicted to getting your fix.
5. Pain. Yes, this is a strange one, but the pain - be it from wiping out or knackered muscles - just makes the good times even more worth it. Plus it puts your every day whining right into perspective.

Spot Check Skate: The Front Skate Park, Weymouth

Here's where to go if you're down Weymouth way (as we say here in the west country). The Front is a decent skate park in the seaside town, and if you've ever been to Weymouth, you'll know that going here is probably preferable to going in the sea. There's also a sea life centre nearby, with the biggest crabs in the world (seriously, they were bigger than me). Watch the video for more information.

New for this week is spot check, where we'll do ickle videos of all the fun places we can find to play. First up, ideal for rainy days (that'll be everyday at the moment, then) an indoor skatepark, whoo! This one is in Bridport, the people are nice (mainly bmxers, just so you know), and it's cheap. The only downside is that it's due to be knocked down for housing development within the next two years, so get there while you can.

Always wiping out? Cut out the pain with Paingone

Paingone
Extreme sports are named so for a reason; hurting yourself is practically guaranteed. I've had many unfortunate incidents involving various body parts and snowboard rails and surfboard fins, but apparently there's alternative ways of fighting the pain as well as the paracetamol/strong beer combination (not recommended, by the way). PainGone is a pen that sends low frequency charge powered by crystals to send pain-stopping messages to the brain. It may sound like hocus pocus, but it's been clinically proven to work and is even used in hospitals.

The Bike Board - goes on snow, water, dirt and road

Bikeboard

At our blog relation Techdigest (it could hardly be a sister) they've compared the Bike Board to the love child of Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra. But actually it's much more than that. You see, the bike board doesn't just work on land. Instead you're looking at a fertility clinic mix up including not only the skateboarding and bmx masters, but a little bit of DNA from Shaun White and Dallas Friday for good measure. Add in some mountain biking genes, and you're there. In short, the Bike Board is a way to combine several extreme sports, albeit in a modified bike-like form, so you can get your stoke on at any time of year. Problem is, you aren't actually doing any particular extreme sport, instead, you're always pissing around on a very, very expensive bike. And for that reason, I won't be buying one.

HangTimer watch measures your airtime

Hang_time_watch

I can't say I've ever needed to know the exact amount of time I've spent in the air when doing a jump, but maybe that's because mine are pretty insignificant. If your airtime can be measured in seconds, rather than milliseconds, then you can measure it to the nearest 0.25 seconds with the HangTimer watch. And if you wanted to check that that last drop you did really was your biggest ever, Hangtimer stores your hugest airtime (as well as your average, and last ten - for information addicts).

Flying on BA, Easyjet and Ryanair with surfboards, snowboards, bikes and other big things

Planeloading

If you want to fly somewhere and take your sports equipment with you. Good luck. While flights are getting cheaper, the extra charges are being piled on us. Travelling the world is cheap, travelling the world with your surf or snowboard isn't. Here's our guide to flying with surfboards, snowboards, skis, bikes and other fun but irregularly shaped things on some of the main airlines flying from the UK.

Ryanair

They really don't like us. Sports equipment is £15 each way. Making the £8 return flight I found cost £38 just because I like to take funny shaped luggage (normal luggage only costs £5 each way).

Easyjet

Easyjet don't like us either. Like Ryainair, sports equipment is £15 each way and if you have a bike, remember to put it in a box, deflate the tires, place the handle bars and pedals flush with the frame. Dismantle it, basically...

British Airways (BA)

One piece of sports equipment up to 23kg is free. Whoopee! Unless you happen to enjoy long boarding. In which case, British Airways don't want to be your friend, and you probably don't want to be their friend either as 8 ft 2 is the maximum length that they'll now carry in the hold.

Falke Support Bra

Falke_braFight the sag - always wear a sports bra when riding. You'll thank yourself when you're old and grey and you still stack up above your belly button. Falke's support bra won't give you a uni-boob, nor does it look horrid when you peel off the layers. The hot pink colour won't fade to dirty grey in the wash, and you can switch the straps to cross over if you so desire. There's really no reason to ever play unsupported ever again.

It could mean the difference between a broken back and paralysis, but few choose to wear back protectors due to the bulky nature and the fact that it's adding another layer to your kit. Yet back protector devotees wouldn't ride without one. What's your view? Would you rather have comfort or protection? Does it depend on what sport you're doing? Yay or nay and why?

Mmmm, bike maintenance, fascinating stuff. Weldtight has created some thoroughly useful podcasts on the subject, helping you to get better acquainted with your bike and its needs and desires. Here's the one on cleaning and lubing your bicycle. Lest you think we are being lazy posting someone else's handiwork, if we can bear to go outside in the cold and splash water around, then we'll bring you our very own bike maintenance video shorty.

Blank_media_bmx
With just 17 days to go, it's about time we started a list of 17 things that we'd totally love to find in our stockings. The elves might struggle to wrap up this Blank Media BMX bike, but there's a reason why it's the best selling bike on Extreme Direct - it's only £129.99 - a great way to try get started without costing Santa too much money.

Skull Skins for goggles, helmets, gloves and yourself

Skull_skins

Skull Skins won't just cover your skull, they'll also revamp your goggles or helmet shield (with see-through images so you can still look around), any sort of helmet or gloves, and even your own face with a themed face mask. Instead of spending a fortune replacing your helmet (or head) when you get sick of it, you can get a new design from around $20 and they'll ship internationally. And if you want to co-ordinate your lid with your new leathers/outerwear, you can get your own custom design made up.

Adidas Winter Slopestyle hosts First SMX Contest

Smx_1

North Legion's SMX bikes look crazy fun (check out the video on their site) and it's apparently easier to pick up than skiing or snowboarding - meaning instant snow fun with no learning. It's also the ideal winter sport for mountain bikers and BMXers, as you can easily convert your tricks to snow and the white stuff is generally much softer to land on than dirt. Check it out at the Adidas Winter Slopestyle where they'll be holding the world's fist SMX contest at the opening of Snow Funpark Wittenburg in Germany.

Natural Healing: Spiezia Rosemary Ointment for Stiff and Aching Joints and Muscles

Spiezia_rosemary_ointment Next time you suffer a killer bruise or are just simply aching all over from your latest session, lay off the Deep Heat and give your body some natural healing. Spiezia's products are made in Cornwall and are 100% organic. Their Rosemary Ointment is designed to be applied twice a day, or left on all night under a bandage! I tested it out after landing on my knees at the snowdome, leaving me with a lovely black bruise and a golf ball lump on my right knee...

Just rubbing the essential oil packed balm on my bruise had a soothing effect, and actually seemed to ease the pain almost instantly. I've tried it a few times since (I'm good at hurting myself) and I've had a really positive experience with this. It's excellent at reducing the potency of aches and when I fell on the same knee again only two weeks later, it was better by the morning after I'd slathered on the ointment. It's certainly pricey at £15.75 for a tiny 30ml pot, but a little goes a long way and I know I'm grateful for my pot every time I land the wrong way up.

Etnies Girl Releases 12 Pack: An All Girls, All Sports DVD

Etnies_12_pack

When I say all sports, what I actually mean is skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, motocross and BMX. Twelve Etnies girls from across the five sports will feature in Etnies first team vid just for the girl division. Including skating from Elissa Steamer, and snowboarding from Leanne Pelosi and Alexis Waite, it's bound to be a good watch. The best bit is, it's free. Simply gather round your computers at 4pm on Friday*, and you can view the world webcast premiere wherever you may be.

It doesn't actually say, but I'm assuming that by 4pm, they mean 4pm in America, which actually for us in the UK is some other time which I'm not clever enough to work out.

Related: Etnies Podcasts are a damn good watch and Etnies also has a whole bunch of helpful beginner tips to ensure you'll be on the next team video (maybe).
