Surfers Against Sewage keep up campaign against 'mermaid tears' on UK beaches
In December 2008, Surfers Against Sewage launched a campaign to rid British coastlines of 'mermaid tears:' plastic and polystyrene pellets, the raw materials in making plastic products, that are dumped in UK waterways in their millions. These pellets litter beaches across Devon and Cornwall, as a SAS investigation discovered, but never decompose, are a threat to wildlife (who mistake them for food) and will continue to build up until factory practice changes.
Still underway, SAS ended the year with a campaign victory as the South West of England's largest plastic manufacturer, Contico Europe, agreed to implement a zero pellet loss policy. However, there's still much more work to be done until industry heads develop an official code-of-conduct for the hundreds of remaining plastic factories across the UK.
Keep reading to see the video and for details on how to get involved with the campaign...
