Julia Baumgartner wins Austrian Open!

Julia_masters

Congrats to new K2 signing and long time Nikita snowboarder Julia Baumgartner (possibly one of the nicest people I've ever met): she won the Women's Slopestyle at the Swatch TTR Three Star Austrian Snowboard Masters on Sunday in Kuehtai, Austria!

The defending champion, Julia impressed the judges for the second year in a row - despite rain and poor conditions - by going huge, beating best mate Conny Bleicher to take the final NASA Austria Cup Tour Title after twelve stops this season.

The win puts Julia - a student at Innsbruck University - at number 11 in the current Swatch TTR World Tour.

For the men, fellow local Patrik Huber won the men's Austrian Master Title after charging through Qualifiers. After being resecheduled from Saturday to Sunday, due to strong winds, the Halfpipe contest - the second installment of the Austrian Masters - was then cancelled due to increasingly bad weather.

For full results log onto www.ttrworldtour.com.

Look out for Julia at the infamous Aesthetiker crew's Swatch TTR 5 Star Waengl Taengl - this weekend in Mayrhofen, in the Zillertal region, Austria!

Bethany Hamilton Makes A Wish!

Beth_hamil_wish3
Writer, surfer and shark attack survivor, Bethany Hamilton may have only just turned 18, but she's already achieved more than most people three times her age.

The Rip Curl international team member has just had one of her most successful competitive seasons ever - finishing third in the Women's World Qualifying Series (WQS), and on her 18th birthday, she announced that she was joining the team for enviornmentally savvy footwear company Ocean Minded Inc.

But, as well as career success, Beth recently made time to give back to some fans - inspired by her brush with death, positivity and determination.

Beth_hamil_wish2_2

Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, two young fans were granted a dream come true: to meet, get a surf lesson or two and swim with their hero - Hamilton - in one of her local breaks - Hanalei Bay, Hawaii.

Fourteen-year-old Lauren is battling the condition Adhesive Arachnoiditis, while sixteen-year-old Katie has Cystic Fibrosis; both girls wanted to meet Bethany after reading her book and being inspired by her courage.

Gallaz maybe no more, but don't cry into your beers yet - Globe Girl has been set up to replace the brand, complete with a brand new team of street she shredders, including 2007's French Women’s Skate Champion: Claire Alleaume.

From Caen in the lower Normandy, Claire has been described as 'a must have accessory at parties... kind of like a jack-in-the-box,' is half english, loves knitting, likes kickflips to fakie and is a member of the all-girl Poseuz Crew. She also holds the world record for the number of kick flips a minute, which you can watch on YouTube.

Woman of the week: Jane Sowerby

Jane_sowerby

Eariler this week The Sun had a feature on Jane Sowerby, a member of the British Disabled Ski Team development team. Jane was paralysed when she fell down a staircase in 2003. Now, just four years later, she's training for 2010 Paralympics with the British team. On her specially adapted ski chair (one ski at the bottom and two attached to her arms) Jane has reached speeds up to 40mph - impressive for an able bodied skier - I'm not sure I've got past 4mph on skis!

Girl of the week: Mountain biker Rachel Atherton

Rachel_athertonImage: Animal Commencal

Downhill mountain biker Rachel Atherton has been out most of the season after she broke her arm in five places right at the start, but now she's back after her injury, and riding better than ever. At the World Cup Series event in Maribor, she not only took first, but was so far ahead of her nearest rival (8.63 seconds), she won by one of the biggest margins, ever!

On her blog, Rachel said 'I think the injury did me good...I feel like I've learned so much, I feel better and stronger now on my bike than ever before'.

Visit www.athertonracing.co.uk to find out more about Rachel (and her two brothers!).

Girl grom: Snowboarder Maddy Mastro

Maddy_mastro

Already sponsored by Roxy, Maddy Mastro started snowboarding when she was six, and is already hitting the park in Mammoth, only a year later. She was the 2007 US National Girls Division Overall Champion at Tahoe, getting first in slopestyle, slalom and giant slalom, and second in boardercross and halfpipe. Quite a talent, then. Maddy says her goals for next season are to 'to get out of the pipe and do more spins in the pipe. I want to get better at everything, and I want to do really big things.' With girls like Maddy already pushing things at seven-years-old, the future of womens snowboarding looks bright.

Pauline_adoImage: Masurel/ASP Europe

Fresh from coming second at the Davidoff Cool Water Wave WQS on Saturday, 16-year-old Pauline Ado, then went on to claim her second second place in almost so many days at the Lacanau Women Pro Junior in France yesterday. Doesn't waste time does she? Despite her second place finish, Ado is still the leader of the Pro Junior.

This time, Pauline Ado lost out to Alizee Arnaud in the final, but dominated the event with five of the top ten wave scores belonging to the 16-year-old. Click here for the full results.

Nollie woman of the week: Easkey Britton - the first female to surf Aileens

Easkey_britton Image: Ken O Sullivan (Surfline)

Surfline have Easkey's report on her first ever tow-in session at Irish break Aileens, and it sounds as if she enjoyed it...

It felt completely surreal. I had a sensation of the wave growing behind me as I dropped down the face. And the speed, what a buzz to have so much speed. I felt totally vulnerable and invincible all at once! I rode the wave all the way in and that was it, I was hooked. I'd never felt such stoke, a pure adrenaline rush, my blood was on fire. I didn't feel the cold anymore and my legs were jelly. I had no idea how big the wave was until I saw the photos. I couldn't believe my eyes; it was the biggest ride of my life.

Woman of the week: 12-year-old world champion kiteboarder Gisela Pulido

12yearold_world_champion_kiteboarde

She's the winner of the Kiteboard Pro World Tour, yet she isn't even a teenager yet. Her tricks see her up to 30ft in the air, and as you can see from the picture, would put any man to shame. Plus, she's the definition of multi-talented - not only is she the best in the world at kite surfing, she also surfs, skateboards and horse rides. All that talent meant she can count Dakine, Ripcurl, VW, Adecco and Shapes Kiteboards amongst her sponsors already. If you can read Spanish, then check out Gisela's blog (non Spanish speakers can still look at the pics!).

Nollie woman of the week: Jodie Winter Kneeboard World Champion

Kneeboardworlds07jodiewint Image: Jodie Winter in the World Championship Finals (BSA)

Britain may not have too many female surfing stars, but we do have a World Champion kneeboarder. Despite the popularity of surfing, kneeboarding is still a little known sport. At the kneeboarding championships in January, Brit Jodie Winter took first in the womens' competition, with team mate Natalie Siverthorne taking second place.

Asp_girl_of_the_week_1 Image: Carissa in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast (ASP)

She's still only 14, but Carissa Moore has just scored second place in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast. And as if that wasn't a big enough feat, along the way, she beat seven times world champion, Layne Beachley, in the third round. Carissa has her own online journal where you can check out her pics and videos, and follow her initiative to pick up five pieces of rubbish next time you're at the beach.

Nollie woman of the week: Kirsty Jones (again!)

Kirsty_flexfoil Image: Flexifoil.com

We've already championed kitesurfer Kirsty Jones twice on the site, and we wish we were better at following her words of wisdom of 'don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today'. However we thought we should mention her again when we saw this picture on the Flexifoil website. Any woman who can smile and still look gorgeous when her leg has been shredded by a slider is worthy of our attention (let alone having the guts to hit the slider in the first place). Check out her online Flexifoil diary to read the full account of her kitesurfing trip to Kenya.

Nollie Woman of the Week: Kirsty Jones

Not only is Kirsty Jones a world class kitesurfer who has recently kite surfed 140 miles unaided from Lanzarote to Morocco, she's also an impressive surfer and she manages to smile in every shot. As someone who could win a gurning contest with the faces I pull catching a wave, this is certainly no mean feat. Check out the video of her world record breaking crossing below...

Adrenalina of the Week: Schuyler McFerran

The ASP might be in France right now, but back in July, Longboarder Schuyler McFerran won the Roxy Jam in Biarritz and the ASP Women's Longboard World Title. She started the comp unseeded, and she's only 19. She shocked even herself with her double win, 'I’m kind of shocked, surprised! I thought I had it in me to win one, … but not this fast'. Here's Schuyler in action...
