New fixie bike magazine Fixed launches in London

When something is described as 'like surfing or snowboarding but you can do it outside your front door in London' I'm listening. This was how fixed gear bikes were first described to me back in March, but having not had a chance to ride one, I just trusted this friends opinion. That was until I went to the launch party for the first international magazine dedicated 100% to fixie bikes, Fixed, in Hackney, London on Saturday; now I completely agree - fitting as in the UK, it's national bike week.
Booze, bikes and beards filled Carhartt's East London warehouse store, as fans of fixies congregated to celebrate the mag with music courtesy of DJ Jay Stephenson, a premiere of movie the Bootleg Sessions 2, comps plus pick up free copies.
Available for free in bike shops across the world - currently London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles - you will also be able to download a PDF of the publication for free from www.fixed-mag.com very soon.
I could explain what a fixed gear bike is - but Wikipedia's description is far better than anything I can do. The Fixed Gear Gallery and Fixed Gear London will give you an idea too.
Ok, I know the link to surfing, snowboarding and skating is tenous now - but trust us; ex pro skaters and snowboarders are already hooked on these back-to-basics machines, which means the rest of us are bound to follow; in a year or two we'll all be riding a new bike. Keep an eye out on Nollie for news and shiny new bikes to get you stoked on cycling soon..

Flow female MTB camps announced!

There's something rather special about getting covered in mud, weaving down steep mountain trials, engaging mind over matter at maximum speed on two wheels, then laughing till your sides split with like minded ladies.
Wether you're already hooked, or are an intermediate looking to progress, FlowMTB are about to start their third summer of women only mountain biking trips in the Alps. From their base in stunning Champery, 90 minutes from Geneva, on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil region, the weeks will take over the Rose des Alpes Hotel for the week of August 2 to 9.

With training run by Masters World Downhill Champion Petra Wiltshire - sponsored by the Trek-Extreme Medics Racing Team presented by thecyclejersey.com and with twelve years of racing experience - the week is not for the faint hearted, as she will push you beyond the limits you thought you were capable of... and then take you around the town's bars afterwards.
As well as improving your two wheeled abilities, the week promises to make you friends for life and improve confidence - as your progressing with other like minded, similarily motivated women. A rest day is planned mid week too: so you'll be able to recharge in a local spa, via a mountain hike or just keep riding...
Cost of the week is a bargainous 800 Euros - which includes accomodation, food, six day lift pass, guiding tuition and airport transfers.
So if you're keen log on to flowmtb.com/ or call organiser Sara on +44 (0308) 123 5664 or the +33 (0) 688 101 757.

Nike Survey: How Sport Can Change Your Life

As a reader of this blog, you're probably already well versed in the exhilaration that sport brings: dropping into fresh, untracked powder lines; making a clean cutback on the early morning surf; storming down that slippery run on your mountain bike that you were sure you'd crash on; or landing that kickflip you've spent months practising: having your mind and body in tune and pushing yourself to progress is the most self rewarding thing on earth.
Now Nike Women have published a survey of 10 000 women from nine European countries, aged 16 to 30, confirming what we've always known: playing sport improves your self-esteem, perception of success, pride, sex drive and self image.
On average, half the women quizzed were involved in sport, with Germany boasting the most active young women, with 67% of the participants involved in sport, while Turkey had the least at just 41%.
But it's not just the obvious physical benefits that have girls stoked on sport - the survey also found sport makes women stronger emotionally. Of those involved in sport, 41% said they could 'conquer the world', 77% have more confidence in themselves, 77% feel successful, 85% feel self pride, while 62% have raised self esteem. Plus, 68 per cent of those ladies involved in sport, said that sport had an even bigger positive impact on their lives - in their career, education, social lives and relationships.
Conducted by independent consumer research group TNS, the online survey was carried out in The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, the UK, Germany, Sweden, Turkey and Russia, to gauge what drives young women to take part in sport.

2012 Mountain Bike venue forced to change
We're stoked that the 2012 Olympics are being held in our hometown of London, England. But the organisers are having a few teething problems with venues in the big smoke: apparently the mountain biking course just isn't 'hilly enough' for the even.
The proposed venue of the Weald Country Park, in Essex, didn't impress inspectors from the International Cycling Union (UCI) when they visited last week - as it wasn't 'challenging' enough for the comp...

Five reasons why you should take up action sports now
Image: Roxy
If you're just reading this blog as an armchair action sports enthusiast, here's five reasons why you should get up off your arse and give one of them a go...
1. Ban boredom. When you've got a board of some description to get on, I can guarantee you'll never utter the dreaded b word again.
2. Travel. Be it surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding or mountain biking, you'll get to go places you might never have discovered otherwise.
3. Body benefits. Get on a snowboard and your thighs won't know what's hit 'em. Most extreme activities are also a fast track way to ban the wobbly bits, and it's fun!
4. Adrenaline. This stuff is the best drug around, and it's as good as free. You'll soon be addicted to getting your fix.
5. Pain.
Yes, this is a strange one, but the pain - be it from wiping out or
knackered muscles - just makes the good times even more worth it. Plus
it puts your every day whining right into perspective.

Atherton Racing girls days with Rachel Atherton
If you could pick anyone to get mountain biking tuition from, Rachel Atherton would probably be a pretty popular choice. Lucky then, that she happens to be running her very own training course in just under two weeks time. Rachel said, 'I really hope the ladies will be interested as I can see it being a really fun day and oh so worth their while, plus I get to ride with girls which makes a change and is always fun!'
The course includes a buffet lunch, DVD and written assessment, classroom tutorials, bike check and goodies bag and costs £180. Visit the Atherton Racing Training Days page to book.

Five reasons why it's also great to ride with boys
1. It's likely your male mates will ride faster and harder, pushing you to do the same.
2. There's no whinging about bums looking big and waiting around for your mate to reapply her lipgloss.
3. You'll do stuff you probably wouldn't have dared try otherwise
- and stomp it.
4. Blokes have less breaks, so your fitness could triple just by keeping going all day long.
5. You might meet a hottie.

Five reasons it's great to ride with girls
1. It's more likely to push your riding on. If you see another girl doing something, then you think you should be able to do it too.
2. You're less likely to get in stupid situations. Girls are more cautious so don't often find themselves in avalanches or dangerous waves.
3. Girly mates are more likely to encourage you in a positive way, rather than the 'you're a loser, do it again' way.
4. You can build a girl-sized jump or head to 3ft waves rather than 6ft monsters.
5. You can get all your mates into your favourite sport and
plan action girls days out rather than shopping trips.
Tomorrow: Why riding with the boys is also awesome!

Obviously the Mountain Biking Wales website has been set up by Wales in order to entice more people to pay a fiver to get into their country. That doesn't mean it isn't good though (wouldn't be website of the week if it wasn't, would it?). Provided for free on the site is information on accommodation, downloadable trail maps, and plenty tips and links for more information, whatever area of the country you're planning to ride. Definitely one to check out if you're crossing the border with your bike, or, erm, even if you live there already.

Product review: Oregon Scientific ATC-2000 Waterproof Action Helmet Camera
Once you've learnt to do clever things on your bike/surfboard/snowboard, the next logical step is to want to film it and show off your skills to the world. The Oregon Scientific ATC-2000 (£99.99 from Halfords) is a standalone waterproof helmet cam that you can take in the sea, on the slopes and basically anywhere you're going. We put it to the test...
Keep reading to take a look at the mountain biking footage we got from the camera...
We couldn't get the format to work in any of our video editing software (Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere) so I'm afraid this is just the raw unedited footage from the camera - still, it gives you a good idea of the sort of quality this captures at the highest quality setting. The camera comes with 32MB inbuilt memory, but we added an extra 1MB SD card to capture up to half an hour of footage.
The Oregon Scientific Action Cam is available at Halfords priced at £99.99.

Five things to do when it's raining and there's no surf
Meh. What lovely weather we're still having. Which coupled with the fact there's zero swell, does not a very fun weekend make. Here's a few suggestions for wet weather activities that don't involve surfing...
1. Snowdomes. Obvious one this, all year round snow that isn't affected by the rain. If you don't ski or board and can't be bothered to learn (shame on you), then you can toboggan.
2. Indoor Skydiving. Note the important word here: indoors. Death less likely.
3. Coasteering. Hardly matters if it's raining if you're in the sea, does it?
4. Go Ape. High wires are more fun when it's raining. Fact.
5. Mountain Biking. What's a little mud between friends?

Always wiping out? Cut out the pain with Paingone
Extreme sports are named so for a reason; hurting yourself is practically guaranteed. I've had many unfortunate incidents involving various body parts and snowboard rails and surfboard fins, but apparently there's alternative ways of fighting the pain as well as the paracetamol/strong beer combination (not recommended, by the way). PainGone is a pen that sends low frequency charge powered by crystals to send pain-stopping messages to the brain. It may sound like hocus pocus, but it's been clinically proven to work and is even used in hospitals.

Get your stoke on: The Hang Board
Image: Pro HangBoard pilot Mira Mackey gets some head first air, eeek!
The cross breeding of extreme sports is getting out of hand. Never mind the bike-cross-board-cross-every extreme sport ever invented, this is the handglider-cross-snowboard-cross-mountain bike. It's called the Hangboard, and it looks like a torture device. Instead of standing on the board, you are hung horizontally a foot above it. Sound dangerous yet? Don't worry, there's brakes! If you fancy a go, then visit Hangboard.ca to find out the when they'll be doing a demo tour near you next season, or soon, you'll be able to buy your own.
Keep reading to see a video of the HangBoard in action...

The Bike Board - goes on snow, water, dirt and road
At our blog relation Techdigest (it could hardly be a sister) they've compared the Bike Board to the love child of Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra. But actually it's much more than that. You see, the bike board doesn't just work on land. Instead you're looking at a fertility clinic mix up including not only the skateboarding and bmx masters, but a little bit of DNA from Shaun White and Dallas Friday for good measure. Add in some mountain biking genes, and you're there. In short, the Bike Board is a way to combine several extreme sports, albeit in a modified bike-like form, so you can get your stoke on at any time of year. Problem is, you aren't actually doing any particular extreme sport, instead, you're always pissing around on a very, very expensive bike. And for that reason, I won't be buying one.

Navman A300
After the end of a season's snowboarding or skiing, you start to wonder just how far you've travelled on your board. If you'd invested in a Navman A300 at the start of the season, you'd wonder no longer. This clever little triangle measures just how far you've skied, snowboarded or mountain biked, and handily takes out the time you've wasted spent on the lift.

Filming you! Samsung and Go Big Innovations
You know you mastered that rainbow rail in the park, or that tightly packed tree run - but unless you've video evidence, no one else does. But even if you have a camcorder, videoing the action can be tricky. The Samsung SC-X205L Sports Camcorder has a weather-resistant clip on lens, so you can capture the action hands-free. If cash is in short supply, you can rent, rather than buy a cam from Go Big Innovations in certain US resorts. So now you've no excuse to show off!

Extreme Hotel Cape Town
If I didn't know better (Tesco got there first), I'd say Extreme were taking over the world. First a TV channel, then a online shop, real life shop, website, credit card, drinks, online world, paint ball, travel agent, extreme medics (for those extreme accidents) and now, a hotel. The first Extreme hotel, in Cape Town, South Africa, not only has nice rooms, a pool and all that lovely stuff, but a climbing wall up the side of it, and more extreme activities that you can shake your (extreme) credit card at. You won't get bored here, when they say there's an A to Z of stuff to scare you silly, they aren't kidding. From abseiling to surfing and shark diving to just taking in Table Mountain, this is a holiday and a half.

HangTimer watch measures your airtime
I can't say I've ever needed to know the exact amount of time I've spent in the air when doing a jump, but maybe that's because mine are pretty insignificant. If your airtime can be measured in seconds, rather than milliseconds, then you can measure it to the nearest 0.25 seconds with the HangTimer watch. And if you wanted to check that that last drop you did really was your biggest ever, Hangtimer stores your hugest airtime (as well as your average, and last ten - for information addicts).

Flying on BA, Easyjet and Ryanair with surfboards, snowboards, bikes and other big things
If you want to fly somewhere and take your sports equipment with you. Good luck. While flights are getting cheaper, the extra charges are being piled on us. Travelling the world is cheap, travelling the world with your surf or snowboard isn't. Here's our guide to flying with surfboards, snowboards, skis, bikes and other fun but irregularly shaped things on some of the main airlines flying from the UK.
Ryanair
They really don't like us. Sports equipment is £15 each way. Making the £8 return flight I found cost £38 just because I like to take funny shaped luggage (normal luggage only costs £5 each way).
Easyjet
Easyjet don't like us either. Like Ryainair, sports equipment is £15 each way and if you have a bike, remember to put it in a box, deflate the tires, place the handle bars and pedals flush with the frame. Dismantle it, basically...
British Airways (BA)
One piece of sports equipment up to 23kg is free. Whoopee! Unless you happen to enjoy long boarding. In which case, British Airways don't want to be your friend, and you probably don't want to be their friend either as 8 ft 2 is the maximum length that they'll now carry in the hold.

Falke Support Bra
Fight the sag - always wear a sports bra when riding. You'll thank yourself when you're old and grey and you still stack up above your belly button. Falke's support bra won't give you a uni-boob, nor does it look horrid when you peel off the layers. The hot pink colour won't fade to dirty grey in the wash, and you can switch the straps to cross over if you so desire. There's really no reason to ever play unsupported ever again.

Yay or Nay: Back Protectors
It could mean the difference between a broken back and paralysis, but few choose to wear back protectors due to the bulky nature and the fact that it's adding another layer to your kit. Yet back protector devotees wouldn't ride without one. What's your view? Would you rather have comfort or protection? Does it depend on what sport you're doing? Yay or nay and why?

Website of the Week: Seb Rogers Blog
Extreme sports photography is a tricky business, as one of the UK's foremost mountain biking photographers Seb Rogers will tell you. His new blog includes tips on how to make sure the rider you're photographing is in focus (prefocus, don't autofocus, is the answer), insider tales of the mountain biking scene, and of course, his captivating photographs. If you're at all interested in photography or mountain biking, Seb's blog is a must-read. Along with gaining inspiration from his photography, you can absorb his wise words and hope it might help you next time your fingers connect with the shutter.

Snow Park NZ has a legendary set up for freestyle boarders and skiers, but what happens when the New Zealand snow disappears and the park turns from white to brown? Dirt Park NZ is born, naturellement. Opening day was yesterday and the park will remain open until January 21st. Mountain bikers can hitch a lift up the mountain on the ski lift, and enjoy a variety of freestyle terrain on the way down. There's also a 6km downhill track and accommodation on site. Day passes start from $35.

Skull Skins won't just cover your skull, they'll also revamp your goggles or helmet shield (with see-through images so you can still look around), any sort of helmet or gloves, and even your own face with a themed face mask. Instead of spending a fortune replacing your helmet (or head) when you get sick of it, you can get a new design from around $20 and they'll ship internationally. And if you want to co-ordinate your lid with your new leathers/outerwear, you can get your own custom design made up.

Vileedge - An Action Sports Social Network
Vileedge is kind of a cross between Myspace, Second Life, and online shopping. It's an online space where you can visit shops (extremepie), talk on forums and make friends a la myspace. It's all based around extreme sports, and you more (very slowly) around the screen on your chosen method of transport (i.e. a skateboard, snowboard etc.). At the moment it's pretty useless unless you fancy making 'friends' with a load of 15 year olds talking in text speak. All in all, I'd rather spend my time actually doing action sports in the real world than scooting around the screen on a pretend snowboard.

Adidas Winter Slopestyle hosts First SMX Contest
North Legion's SMX bikes look crazy fun (check out the video on their site) and it's apparently easier to pick up than skiing or snowboarding - meaning instant snow fun with no learning. It's also the ideal winter sport for mountain bikers and BMXers, as you can easily convert your tricks to snow and the white stuff is generally much softer to land on than dirt. Check it out at the Adidas Winter Slopestyle where they'll be holding the world's fist SMX contest at the opening of Snow Funpark Wittenburg in Germany.

Natural Healing: Spiezia Rosemary Ointment for Stiff and Aching Joints and Muscles
Next time you suffer a killer bruise or are just simply aching all over from your latest session, lay off the Deep Heat and give your body some natural healing. Spiezia's products are made in Cornwall and are 100% organic. Their Rosemary Ointment is designed to be applied twice a day, or left on all night under a bandage! I tested it out after landing on my knees at the snowdome, leaving me with a lovely black bruise and a golf ball lump on my right knee...
Just rubbing the essential oil packed balm on my bruise had a soothing effect, and actually seemed to ease the pain almost instantly. I've tried it a few times since (I'm good at hurting myself) and I've had a really positive experience with this. It's excellent at reducing the potency of aches and when I fell on the same knee again only two weeks later, it was better by the morning after I'd slathered on the ointment. It's certainly pricey at £15.75 for a tiny 30ml pot, but a little goes a long way and I know I'm grateful for my pot every time I land the wrong way up.
