New fixie bike magazine Fixed launches in London

Fixed_magazine_first_issue

When something is described as 'like surfing or snowboarding but you can do it outside your front door in London' I'm listening. This was how fixed gear bikes were first described to me back in March, but having not had a chance to ride one, I just trusted this friends opinion. That was until I went to the launch party for the first international magazine dedicated 100% to fixie bikes, Fixed, in Hackney, London on Saturday; now I completely agree - fitting as in the UK, it's national bike week.

Booze, bikes and beards filled Carhartt's East London warehouse store, as fans of fixies congregated to celebrate the mag with music courtesy of DJ Jay Stephenson, a premiere of movie the Bootleg Sessions 2, comps plus pick up free copies.

Alpinestars_1

From it's roots in the glamourous, but adrenaline fuelled, world of motorsports, Alpinestars has followed on from it's women's line launch last summer, with a brand new ladies website.

Imagine Rachel Bilson's wearable style with a petrol head edge, as if she was hanging out at the Monaco Grand Prix, and you've pretty much summarised the Alpinestar's Lady In Red 2008 line. All vintage biker jackets, grown up grunge and tailored on trend tops, like the F1 jacket and Origami denim dress, you can see the full range online at the newly launched website or keep a look out in your local independent boutique.

Nike Survey: How Sport Can Change Your Life

Miriam
As a reader of this blog, you're probably already well versed in the exhilaration that sport brings: dropping into fresh, untracked powder lines; making a clean cutback on the early morning surf; storming down that slippery run on your mountain bike that you were sure you'd crash on; or landing that kickflip you've spent months practising: having your mind and body in tune and pushing yourself to progress is the most self rewarding thing on earth.

Now Nike Women have published a survey of 10 000 women from nine European countries, aged 16 to 30, confirming what we've always known: playing sport improves your self-esteem, perception of success, pride, sex drive and self image.

Five reasons why you should take up action sports now

Reasons_to_take_up_surfingImage: Roxy

If you're just reading this blog as an armchair action sports enthusiast, here's five reasons why you should get up off your arse and give one of them a go...

1. Ban boredom. When you've got a board of some description to get on, I can guarantee you'll never utter the dreaded b word again.
2. Travel. Be it surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding or mountain biking, you'll get to go places you might never have discovered otherwise.
3. Body benefits. Get on a snowboard and your thighs won't know what's hit 'em. Most extreme activities are also a fast track way to ban the wobbly bits, and it's fun!

Head to La Plagne for off-slope action

La_plagne

Not everyone likes skiing or snowboarding (actually, they do really, they just haven't realised it yet), so if you're forced to holiday with someone who hasn't yet discovered their inner snow god or goddess, then try La Plagne. As well as 225km of piste for you, there's loads of stuff for them to do while you're tackling black runs.  From ice climbing on frozen waterfalls to the only bobsleigh in France, there's plenty going on off the slopes - you might even want to take a break from the pistes and join them, stuff like on-snow motorsports does sound pretty fun, after all.

Click here to check out the La Plagne website.

Like that? Try more snowboarding
