Handmade Heroines: knit yourself a new year owl jumper

thursday_thrift_knit_yourself_jumper_owls_free_pattern.jpg

The second in the Handmade Heroines series on Nollie (or should that be Thrifty Thursdays?) is the work of Edinburgh based writer, academic, knitter and designer Kate Davies. Based in Edinburgh, Kate produces vintage style woolen works inspired by her day job, which are then tested for their winter warming by hiking and camping the snowy peaks near her home.

As well as selling patterns for hats, dresses, scarves and more on her blog Needled, she kindly posted this super cute owl jumper pattern online in January 2009. And, with one of my new year resolutions being to learn to knit, it's an ideal -  if challenging -  debut project, perfect for pulling on post a surf or snow session.

Keep reading to download the pattern & see projects from across the globe...

Music Club: singer / songwriter folk pop prodigy Laura Marlin

Laura_marling_USA_UK_2010_tour_singer_songwriter_acoustic_guitar.jpg

2009 may have been the year that female musicians dominated Britain's musical landscape, but 2010 is already ear marked to belong to 19 year old prodigy Laura Marling.

Creating beautiful folk pop, but laced with a realism edge of depression and unrequited modern love, the Hampshire born singer songwriter released her first four song EP at just 17 - My Manic and I (2007) - after support slots with Jamie T, who asked her on the tour after witnessing her second ever gig. Since then the wise beyond her ears folk star has, released a second EP, London Town, plus her first album Alas I Cannot Swim in 2008, which was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize, along with a string of singles - all accompanied by strings and piano.

Spring 2010 preview: Billabong dresses out now

billabong_2010_preview_out_now_spring_dresses.jpg

It's not even Christmas yet, but our uber keen US cousins are already scouting for their spring outfits - with the likes of Billabong already having their 2010 collections for sale online. In a sneak preview, here's a selection of the new season dresses from the Aussie born brand - which cover three themes: Road Less Travelled, Here Comes The Sun and Designer's Closet. As the first name suggest there's a big boho and travel influence on Billabong's summer wear once more, while the second has added abstract and animal prints for some modernity, with a nature inspired palette.

The final line is all 80s influenced trends, and paying homage to vintage style - from tees to tights and studded denim. Look out for previews of their tops, bottoms, swimwear and more on Nollie very soon, but first check out their dresses in detail after the jump...
